Hello. Is there a simple way to test a VA when it is taken off the distributor. A buddy of mine brought over what I call a vacuum tester. You stick a rubber hose where the vacuum line goes and pump up by hand. Is the VA arm supposed to hold in place or when you stop pumping return back to where it started?? Also is there any kind of gasket that goes between the block and ditributor flange?? Thanks, Brian.

thermostats for 54 Patty

Ok guys, need to know a little info. I've seen on the internet you can buy a thermostat housing, gasket, and thermostat for $125. Now, they show a normal looking, present day thermostat. I guess what I'm asking is, does this housing have different inners to hold the normal looking thermostat, or are they just trying to take your money? I have seen on Max Merrit where you can buy either the present day looking thermostat or the bellows looking thermostat. Present day says it is low temp, bellows type says it is standard temp. Can you use either type thermostat in the original housing with the wire retainer?? Thanks, Brian.

Howard, If I'm correct, I can remove the distributor then turn oil pump. That way when reinstalling distributor, I'll have to turn the ditributor counter clockwise. That way there is room for advancing. Brian.

Thankk you guys for your info in my last post. You were right!! Carb linkage was the problem. The 359 now idles as it should. It seems though it is laboring quite a bit. I advanced the timing and it helps. My problem now is that it is advanced alot. Now i'm going to tell on myself. When I went to clean the oil pump, I did what the manual said. Bring it up on #1 at 6 degrees btd, then mark my distributer. When reinstalling I must have been off a tooth on the cam. Any suggestions. To me I just don't have a lot of adjust ment left to fine tune. One other thing. I want to take out the distributer to clean. Any thing I shound know before taking out. Like governer parts and so on. Thanks, Brian.

Owen, I understand the suck port for the wipers, but if the other port blows air, what is the purpose of blown air to the intake??? The fitting that goes from carb to distributor, is that vacuum?? Also, the air line that goes to the tank and brake, how does that work. Thanks, Brian.

Good evening fellas. Well,as I said in my last post, I cranked up the old 359. It was dishearting to hear that she wanted to start, but the more I cranked, I knew it wasn't going to go. The timing seemed very retarded, so I loosened the ditributer and advanced the timing. After adjusting, she did come to life. I was thrilled. Now, I have the next problem. The engine starts pretty easy , but after starting the rpms just race out of control. I'm not sure why. Hoping maybe you guys can shed some light my way. My opinion, it seems to be either in the governor, or distributer. Any thoughts. Thanks, Brian.

Hello everyone. It has been a some what long road , as I am just about ready to crank over the 359. Just tinkering with small things like plug wires and such. Well, I'm kinda embarrassed about asking but, there is 2 lines going to the, what I call, vacuum pump on top of the fuel pump. Which line goes where?? I'm guessing the windshield wiper line goes on in, and the line running up to the carb is your out. I forgot to mark them. Thanks,Brian.
