HI, I think I have the same car as you. Are you able to time it without a timing light? A guy said to raise the piston in #1 spark plug all the way to the top because Packard timed the cars from that plug, even put in a wire to see that it is all far up as possible, look to see that the points are closing and tighten the distributor and replace the cap. He said it will get it going until I can get it timed properly with a timing light. What are you thoughts? The backyard mechanic who is working on it has no light so I'm looking for another way. What are your thoughts?

I called a Packard owner yesterday to borrow his timing light and he didn't have one. He told me how to time it without one. He said take out spark plug #1 because Packard usually timed it with that plug. Turn the motor just enough to raise the piston all the way to the top, even put in a wire into the hole to see that it is at the top. Then look to see that the points are closing, tighten the distributor and replace the cap. He said it is good enough to drive until I can get it times properly. I'm interested in what you gentlemen have to say. I learn so much from you.

My car has been sitting in his garage for 7 years. All fluids have been changed except the transmission. Someone said to make sure it is full and it is OK to drive. What do you say? The trans was rebuilt with some Mercedes parts and ran perfectly the former owner said. I don't want to damage it but really need advice. If OK then OK.

I am so glad that my mechanic told me to buy 2 copper washers and I did. $1.06 but well worth it. Thank you!

Yes, Napa uses 4497 but they are clearly too big for my 53 Clipper Deluxe, not sue about any other years or models. I think this site should include the Napa #11147 number(3/8-24) that actually fits. If any of you know how please inform them...or direct me. I am so grateful for all of your advice. I love this Packard family.

After just reading Ross's post I stand corrected. I think he must be right because he is the one who told me what part number at Napa. OK so the rear is 11146 and the 2 fronts are 11147. I haven't changed the rear so I didn't know until now. I will soon and I'm glad to know the right part number. Thank you.

All the hoses for my 53 Clipper Deluxe are the same hose, 2 in front and 1 in back. Do you know how to contact Packard Info so they can change it in their material because I got the print out from this site with the wrong part number in it.

Napa gave me the number in their computer # 4497. They were too big. The proper part number is # 11147. A perfect match. Thank you Packard info one more time. Now I have new wheel cylinders, hoses and brakes.

I have the same as you pictured on my 53 Deluxe. Where do I get the air filter? the part number from Napa is about 3" high and would dent my closed hood from the screw and wing nut in th3 middle. The one in there now looks like someone just stepped on it to make it lower?
