If you were to overhaul your engine...
Home away from home
Home away from home

patgreen
what would you automatically replace?

I'm thinking things like the timing chain (assuming you have one) because it seems prudent (cost effective) to heave the old one...

What else gets the closest scrutiny?

This is assuming a normal engine that's tired, not one that has come to a bizarre end.

I've read that new engines may come with new, space age one or two molecule deep lubricants that are applied at birth. Can that be done on a rebuild?

The carb is scheduled to be re whatevered by a legitimate expert. Waiting for bumper and parts to return from chroming, then carb....

Salt still on streets here and don't like to go out when the car isn't properly dressed. It embarrasses her.

Then a new headliner and welting and I hope I can still afford gas, given its meteoric price rise....

Here is a link to specific amounts of chemical added when a bottle of ZDDP is added to 4,5 or 6 quarts of oil.

I hope Own will check it out and tell us how this relates to Rotella.....

And here are specs for Rotella 15-40, but dated 2011....

Ring & Pinion Questions!

I've been offered a NOS ring and pinion set for my car. Principal reason for installing would be to either cruise faster or get better mileage. It is a 2.92 rear end if I remembered correctly.

S0o what kind of job is this: quick and simple, or complex and precise?

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this....

83,000 for me and the compression still meets specs.

+1 for the Rotella 15-40. I add a bottle of ZDP and the Rotella I use isn't synthetic...

Many get it at Sams club....

Re: Matador Maroon Color

50 - 52 Matador red was available (possibly other years as well).

This site has a set of 1952 color chips, but the scan was made from deteriorated originals so isn't much help.

Looked at the Packard club and they are missing the second page (which has matador red, of course).

You might want to get a set of paint chips on flea-bay, where they turn up...

I spent some time with the sample here in Photoshop, but could produce nothing that seemed viable.

Good luck; it is a nice color.

I'd like to see sunset red, as well....

EDIT: Found a 1951 DuPont chip set on Ebay which does not show Matador red. Since other colors apparently could not be matched, Matador may have been a victim of that lack of ability....

Glad to have you with us!

As the happy owner of a torsion bar car I hope you will make an effort to ride in one.

The ride is amazing! Particularly if the car has radial tires....

Happy testing!

Were all the V-8s made from identical castings?

Or was the bore different for bigger or smaller engines?

Supposedly the V-8 was designed to go up to 440 cubic inshes... Again, could a current engine be bored for this or would a somewhat different casting be required?

I've driven my 56 and Cadillacs of similar vintage. I'd have to give a clear nod to the tl ride. Of course that doesn't address a number of other issues.....

In the quality small car field, let us not overlook the Porsche....
