If you know which resistance value of your sender than you can cross reference it to an aftermarket unit. That's what I did with my 47 Packard. But since my unit was a basket case, I hooked up some resistors and calculated that I could use the 0-30 Ohms sender which works with most pre- 1965 GM cars.

Ohms/Resistance
(Empty/Full) Popular Models
0-90 Ohms most GM cars, 1965-up
73-10 Ohms pre-1989 Fords & most Chryslers
240-33.5 Ohms Industry standard, works on many popular cars
0-30 Ohms most pre-1965 GM cars
16-158 Ohms most '89-up Fords

Checkout this on youtube, Around 7 mins, and 30 sec.;

And if you would like I can follow you some measurements, and pictures. It wouldn't be that hard to make, if you can't find a replacement.

Thanks, at least I've got that right. I was almost thinking about getting rid of the car after all the comments of the video. That would at least would have made my wife happy to see the car gone. So for now I'm not going to worry about that engine and get the engine that belongs in it checkout and than swap them out.
Thanks!

Well I'm just glad it starts. Still sorting out the carb. Normally it fires right up, but as I said that engine is coming out.
Now for my question, the starter is suppose to turn faster than that? I didn't think it would turn very fast since it has a gear reduction built in it.
Yes heavy duty cables (not sure but I'm thinking O size) and all connections are clean.

Yes, I would agree, but as I said that engine is coming out in the future and this is a work in progress project.
Here's one more video of just the engine running and I have tighten the Fan Belt since this video was recorded.

Well moving a little slower than I had planned. Got the engine back together and running, still can hear a tapping coming from the #1 cylinder, but at least I can get it out of the driveway. I hoping to get the original engine back in by next Summer. At least I have good oil pressure, she doesn't overheat and she charges up, just a little hard to start sometimes (see Youtube Videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aotfkP8XVbM ).

I think the real question is where is the leak coming from? You have to know that before you can fix it. Also which model of Packard are you talking about, because I know that the '47 had a Service Bulletin about leaks around the bolts that hold the differential together. So lets step back and take another look at the problem.
