West had a good picture of the round coil that was used for some of the 29 production year. Early cars used an oval coil which used a different switch.

1929 Model 640 RAdiator Shell

Anyone out there have a good restorable grille shell for a 1929 640 Packard? Mine has had a lot of work done to it and I would like to upgrade. A 645 grille shell would also work with some modifications.

Thanks,

What may have happened is that someone in the past needed to repair the wood in the rear section and drilled the holes to access the screws that attach the longitudinal wooden body framing to the rear tub.

Don't know if this really applies to your problem, but in restoring my Bijur pump, I ended up sweating the two halves of the tank apart, then re-soldered them together again when putting everything back together.

I have spoken to the folks at Apple Hydraulics about rebuilding them and they said they could do it, but the cost is almost $1,000 for a set of four.

Mark:

I am in Hawaii for three weeks on vacation. If you call me at (808) 306-5148, perhaps I can help you with identifying your car and it's history.

I believe that the trunnion block was added with the 6th series, but don't recall that narrower shoes were specified then.

Make a call to Guy Slaughter, Judson Ihrig or Harley Neff, all of whom are in the Oahu phone book and they can help you identify the car and assess the condition. Guy is the fellow mentioned above who used to drive his 1930 734 Speedster around regularly. Jud is an encyclopedia on all makes of early cars and Harley owned a 640 Phaeton until a few years ago when I bought it from him.

Sixth Series Interior Firewall Covering
Home away from home

jimw
It is my understanding that the inside of the firewall on the 6th Series Standard Eight open cars was covered with carpeting and that the Custom Eight open cars used a vinyl-like upholstery material (padded). Can anyone confirm or contradict this assumption? Pictures?

Thanks,

Rod:

Since there are no holes in the frame for attaching the front hood latches, what I am trying to ascertain is whether the latches are just riveted to the frame covers or whether they are riveted thru the frame covers to a bracket on the back side of the frame covers.
