Re: Smoke Problem

I put this post up some time ago about my car smoking and running like crap.

Yesterday I switched out the old carb with another old carb and the smoke went away substantially. The car is still running like crap but at least I know the problem appears to be the carb.

Does anybody have a line on a good Carter carb at a decent price? I sure hate to spend $225 just to have it rebuilt.

I would say it is kind of blue. I did a compression test and that seems ok 110-120.

Jim,
My 51 has the door panels as descibed by you. I'm not sure if it is the same model but my body style number is 2492 if that helps. Parts are pretty easy to come by. The best advice I can give you is Don't over pay.

I checked that. The choke seems to be working properly.

When I start my 51 cold, the engine runs real smooth with hardly any exhaust. However, when it starts to heat up toward normal operating temp, I get more smoke and a little rougher idle. Any thoughts or experiences on this is appreciated.

Paint Cross Reference Info Needed

Does anybody know any paint codes for metallic green for a 1951 model?

What I really need is code on the can. If there is anybody who has painted their car to give me the brand and color formula on the can. Local paint shops do not have the information and the color strips on the paint charts are not large enough for their computer to scan. Thanks.

I just found some new springs on EBAY and ordered same. I had an old generator laying around but of course the spring I needed was also broken. The local rebuild shop is no longer in business. They probably got ran out of business by the business wrecking regulations here in California.

Thank you for all the replies and information. I removed the generator to examine the brushes and found one of the springs that holds the brush against the armature was broken and not making contact. Trying to find a replacement will be a real adventure. I also found out that there are no shops locally that can test a generator anymore.

Does somebody out there knows how to test generator output with a multimeter? I believe mine is not putting out.
Thanks,
