Water in the Oil: 1930 Packard 7-40 Super 8
#21
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Rich1028
Going through making progress in rehab'ing a lot in the engine compartment...new head/exhaust gaskets, carb, etc.

The latest: I drained the oil and it looks as if I have water (antifreeze) mixed in with the oil. When drained into a pan, there is major separation with a layer of oil on top and a greenish sludge on the bottom. It does not resemble clean or dirty oil at at.

So my questions and areas where I need assistance:

-Where other than the head gasket can the antifreeze be mixing with the oil?

-I've removed, cleaned and inspected the head and it looks good...no cracks, no issues.

-I am changing the head gasket.

-If the block has a crack, where do I need to look for the crack...ie, are there places on the Super 8 engine that are prone to cracks?

-Where else, what parts of the car do i need to look at for why/how this water is getting into the engine oil.

-When I get home I will post a few photos that I took of the oil/sludge mixture.

I am hoping, so much, that this is some kind of one-off and water somehow got in here through a bad gasket or something else. Pending finding any cracks, I am going to reassemble, fill the oil, run it for a while and see if the oil remains clean or is starting to mix again with water.

Any help, suggestions or recommendations with your experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich

SCAMMER ON Packard Info

Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Rich1028
Hi,
Wanted to alert everyone to a scammer on the website. The ID name of this person is Saddj. He is a new user...just joined up at Christmas. Even with this scammer ID'd, these clowns will simply just get a new username and try to scam again. Just be careful as scammers are out there.
Here is what happened:
I posted a couple weeks ago about needing a set of window wings for a 1930 Packard Roadster 7-40. I got a reply from this Saddj character that a man by the name of Sam has a set of these in good condition ready to sell. I noticed that Saddj's location was in the UK (my first point of suspicion). He included an email for Sam at bornicesam@gmail.com. So I emailed Sam asking for some pictures of the wings. He sent me one picture of an old window wing and immediately asked for an address to send and payment info from me. I asked him for more photos of the wings which he was not able to provide because he "did not have them". Here is the best...he said he wants $90...yes, read that right, ninety bucks for the set of wings, but that I needed to send a paypal payment to his wife's address and send it only as "friends and family". For those of you that don't know, when you send a payment via paypal as "friends and family", you lose any/all fraud protection/coverage from paypal. make sure when you do send "friends and family" that you have an agreement and actually know that person well.
Obviously, this is all a scam. Nobody is selling a set of window wings that are in good shape for a 1930 Roadster for 90 bucks.
So, be on the lookout for these scam artist scumbags. If it doesn't look right, it usually isn't. I know right away that this was likely a bunch of BS.
Not sure who we need to talk to, but this Saddj clown should be removed from the site.

Fully functional DL 51 carb from a 1930 Super 8 (Packard 7-40). This carb is in excellent mechanical and working condition. I am removing it from my car as I’ve purchased a new carb from pac-carbs and am upgrading (at a significant cost). This carb looks and works fine, I just wanted a cosmetically nicer carb from pac-carb.
Also included with this carb is a brand new float bowl cover and new gaskets.
$2200 or best offer
Price includes shipping to the continental US via FedEx, overseas available at actual shipping cost.

Really...wow. I never thought of the powder coating option because I want to keep the car as original as possible. Does the powder coating hold up under the extreme heat on the exhaust portion of the manifold?

Another question I have here...does anyone have a referral for someone / company that does porcelain coating work? I am going to need to get that new exhaust a porcelain job before installing it!

Agree. I also noted that the on the '29, while the linkage is the same, the intake portion of the manifold is rounded. On the '30 it is squared off. So both manifolds have the same squared intake portion, but the linkage is different.

Help PLEASE 1930 super 8 exhaust manifold

Rich1028
Hi All,
Really need some help here. I am having problems with replacing the exhaust manifold on my 1930 Super 8 7-40. I purchased a manifold, but the throttle linkage attachment does not line up. The manifold currently on the car has the throttle linkage attached right next to the lower pipe flange. The one I received has no mounting holes near the exhaust flange, only two holes on the left side bottom of the intake manifold. Why does this not match! What am I missing here? I have circled in red the differences between the two manifolds.
