1956 Clipper Pushbutton Ultramatic Parts Question
#21

Good evening,

I've put a battery into the Clipper to see if the motor would turn over. After trying the starter, smoke came out of the reversing relay for the transmission and I turned the power off. The transmission was installed prior two my getting the car and it had never been tried.

I have pulled the actuator motor and it had been put together with the brushes out of position as is noted in other warning sections of the forum.

I now need to replace the brushes but the edge damage has obscured some of the markings. I can only see the M12 part of the marking. Would anyone be able to tell me the rest of the part number and if they are available from any parts dealers? The rest of the motor looks ok.

With regards to the reversing relay, I've removed the cover and the points are fried and the resistor is cracked. Are replacement relays available or do I need to try to fix this one? If they are available, could you please let me know where to look for them?

Thank you for your help.

Bob

I've just made enough room to start on it. I'm trying to sort through some of the errors in the wiring and mechanical systems ( like the carb with the linkages assembled upside down with the wrong kit installed) so it has a long way to go. Fortunately I have my 51 to drive as a relief.

1956 clipper custom constellation - fuel pump

Good evening everyone.

I am in the process of re-assembling my 1956 Clipper Custom Constellation that I had acquired from an estate and I am confused regarding the correct fuel pump.

The engine currently has the single action pump as is shown in the repair manual, however it has vacuum wipers. There is an old spare dual action pump that came in the pile of parts with the car.

The manual indicates that all of the 56th series use the single action pump and then in the next section, it shows the tubing diagram that has one leg going to the vacuum pump.

Should the car use the single action or should I re-build the dual action instead?

Also, are there any illustrations or photo's that would show the routing of the vacuum lines? I saw a few engine photo's online and the manual has illustrations of other items but I didn't see anything that would show the correct routing.

Thank you for any help that you can provide.

Mal,

My son already registered the 200 under Bigbadbernard - I think. He's the one that put me onto you guys for help and he was right. This is one of the most helpful forums that I have seen.

Thank you and the other members for having such an open and useful site.

Howard,

Thank you for the guidance. I will take a look at the voltage loss tonight to see if there is too much resistance in the system.

1951 200 charging question

Good evening. The charging light on my 1951 200 was illuminated and I've cleaned the generator commutator and have installed new brushes.
I've reinstalled the generator this weekend and while I was running the car, at idle the battery light was out. As I began to drive it or increase the engine RPMs the light starts to come on again.

I took it out again tonight and drove it with the lights on. Again, at idle, the battery light was off even though the lights were on. As I drove it and the rpms increased, the battery light illuminated. Again, when the car was idling, the battery light would go out.

I'm not sure what would cause this. When I had checked the voltage regulator middle (bat or gen?) terminal yesterday, grounded to the positive battery terminal, the reading was 7.35v.

Would anyone have any thoughts on what might cause this condition?

Thank you for any help.

Bob
