Does anyone here know where I can find the physical size/ specs for a '49 Limo muffler? The muffler was missing on my car when I got it. There is a seller on Ebay that has several listed that are "supposedly" for Packard, but he doesn't know for sure. Thanks!

'49 gas tank sender unit question.

Hi, Does anyone have any tips for working on a fuel sender unit for this year? I'm working on cleaning out the gas tank and I pulled the sender unit, and it looks to be in great shape overall. I am getting a resistance reading on my meter but it bounces around quite a bit when I move the float up and down. I don't know what the correct resistance range is for a working unit and I'm not sure how I should proceed, so any info would be a big help. Thanks!!

Autolite IGP-4502E distributor question

hi all,
the inside of my distributor has some rust and I want to remove the govenor weights and springs so I can remove the rust. There is what looks like a spring coil type retainer clip that locks breaker cam down. Does anybody know how to remove this clip? I've tried squeezing the ends of the clip together and spreading them apart to remove and no luck. Is there a special tool for this? I've been using a small needle nose pliers and there is not much room in there to work. Thanks!!!!

Inner fender color

I have the front clip off my '49 and am working on the inner fender panels. They are coated with a thick asphalt type coating that looks like it might be some kind of rustproofing or undercoating. It comes off when heated with a heat gun and scraped with a putty knife. It looks to be pretty old so I am wondering if this was something Packard did or if it was done by a dealer? The paint underneath is still shiny black. Also, I'm trying to find out if the inner fenders were originally painted black or if they are supposed to be the same as the body color. I've looked at a few photos in the archive and they all appear to be painted black, so any input would be great. I can't afford to redo my limo as a show car but I would still like to get as many details correct as possible, Thanks!!

Okay, I removed the front engine mount today, very easy! The rubber mounts are shot, so I ordered a new pair From Kanter. I used some blocks of wood to rest the engine on until I'm ready to put the mount back on. I also ordered a quart of Packard Gray engine paint so I can repaint the engine in what I understand is the correct color, the rebuilder used Green. Now, I have a couple of new questions, first what is the correct color to paint the engine mount? Is it the same color as the engine or is it painted black like the chassis? Also, what is the proper bolt to use to fasten the mount to the chassis? The previous owners used new bolts , but I don't know if they are the correct type. Any input is appreciated, thanks!

Thank you! That's what I needed to know. The engine is the 327 by the way.

Hi. I need to replace the front motor mount rubber on my '49 as well as get access to the bottom two bolts on the water pump. i don't see any real explainations in the manual as to removal of the mount, so I was wondering if anyone has any input on the best way to go about it. Any input is appreciated, Thanks!

Hi everyone. I just wanted to post a quick update on my engine question. I decided to pull the front clip off to get better access to the engine and front suspension for cleaning and inspection. . After a better view and cleaning of the boss on the block I was able to make out the whole engine number, it was "M306451". a quick check of the engine number list shows that this engine is from a 1954 Clipper DeLuxe. I was a little disappointed that I don't have the original engine in my car, but it's still pretty much the same 327 engine and it has 10 horsepower more than the '49 version so I can live with it! What makes me feel a lot better about things is what I found when I pulled the head and valve covers- Nice new .030 oversize pistons and exhaust valves!! The valve bay was completely cleaned and primed and new valve springs installed! It looks like this engine has had a pretty major rebuild and it has been run very little, if at all. I don't know why they didn't replace the intake valves as well but it looks like there are new seats or at least they were reground. The engine is pretty stiff when turning over by hand. I can manage it with a two foot breaker bar on my ratchet, so I'm hoping the bearings are all new as well, but I haven't pulled the pan yet. The plan for right now is a lot of cleaning and getting a gasket set for the engine. Unfortunately whoever did the work on this engine used silicone in place of gaskets . they also painted the engine in Packard green instead of gray, so I'm on the fence as to repainting the engine in gray or just touching up the green.

Did Packard build their own bodies for the LWB limousines or did they have another company build them? Just curious and trying to learn! Thanks!!
