If you are worried about the pressure then use buy the same type of hose they use for fuel injection. It usually has a higher pressure rating then regular heater hose. Any parts store should carry this.

Hi Owen,
Yes I have kept mine in my trunk (English = boot) toolbox just for those little roadside emergencies. Are you interested in the thief proof numbers from 55 if so I can mail mine to you

I generally don't favor modifications but did install a Pertronix on my 56 Carib because I couldn't remove the distributor and don't like to install points with the distributor in place for a variety of reasons. I retained the original factory coil. Performance is fine, no better and no worse than with the traditional ignition system. Pertronix may prove to have terrific reliability but with a point system you can almost always survive a failure in 10 minutes with a point file or perhaps a new condensor. Thus I carry the materials to convert back in the glove box.

Hi,
I recently got rid of the condenser and contact breaker (English = points) on my 55 400 and fitted a Pertronix 1183 kit with the standard coil at the moment and all seems well, has anyone else gone this way and if so is has anyone fitted the matching Flamethrower 40kv coil..? Think the plug gaps would need to be increased.
Also does anyone have any tips for removing the headlight switch without the special tool J5986, it seems impossible and my dash lights don't work and I think the problem is there. Or does anywhere make a repro of this tool which can be purchased.
Regards & thanks,

Dave UK.

Have you browsed the pressure charts in the service manual? I looked very briefly and didn't see specific reference to the cooler though you may want to look more carefully for that. The highest pressure I noted was front pump pressure of 170 psi in reverse.

Hi,
Does anyone know the approximate operating pressure of the Ultramatic transmission fluid at the cooler. Reason I am asking is I have a used but almost new B&M transmission cooler lying around which after reading this thread I want to fit on my 55 400, unfortunately there are no hoses with it so I need to buy some of the correct rating.
Thanx,
Dave UK.

Sorry, don't have a 22nd series... but here's a 23rd series, I think they are the same (sill-wise).

Re: Leaking rear main seal-"Sneaky Pete" tool

I replaced the main and rod bearings last year and also the lower part of the rear seal since at the time I didn't have a tool to remove the upper portion and figured the seal was OK since it didn't leak very much. I hade loosened all of the main bolts in an attempt to get the crank a bit lower but it didn't seem to helps so I left the upper portion of the seal alone. I did use the "T" cotter pin method to roll out the old bearings though and it worked great.I guess I will the Sneaky Pete a try and see how it goes.

the taxis were on the junior chassis, so the grille will be different, but there is a similar whisker extending from the parking light bezel "around the corner". is that what you are looking for? If your car looks completely different, it's not a 48 - 50 as the resemblance between years and models is pretty strong
