G'day all, My reason for responding to this thread is that many people may not be aware that the US was in a mini-depression in 1938 and things were very tough in the auto industry, to the extent that dealers were paid $25 to smash the engine blocks of trade-ins, to generate new car sales. I consider that Packard's move to align Senior ( Super Eight" cars with the 120 lines was a decision predicated on achieving more sales in a volatile and depression tinged new car sales environment. I can see the wisdom and knowledge in both Owen and Peter's responses and can only agree wholeheartedly that the Traditional Senior line ended with the 39 Twelve BUT, the Packard tradition was held aloft ( a few rungs lower perhaps) in very difficult times by the 39 Super Eight "heir apparent". I'm sure that there were many misgivings about dropping the Twelve but the the 39 Super Eight was an excellent new generation "Senior" car. I know that I shall probably receive some flak for this but after 44 years of owning and driving Packards as my favourite cars, thats how I see it. Best Regards Peter Toet, P.S. I can still get them expensively made onesey-twosey. My question for this thread: "is the potential remaining demand enough to justify buying 50 more in one batch?" There was never a question that the core parts could be produced less expensively per unit by CNC in whatever numbers... until it is time to pony up the up front $$$. I'm the only one who has stepped up in the past and I may have better things to do with my $$$ these days than invest in 50 units of something that may only sell 5 more in its lifetime. Craig

i wouldn't have much other choice but to rebuild mine.

I'm glad you got it alright! Just let me know when you get to the point of needing some more and I'll be happy to send some your way. I just sprayed 4 large steel hockey goal frames for a local hockey arena and they wanted them in red. I'm tempted to make a casting from some of the left over material, then I can tell people that Prothane just came out with a Packard line of bushings! HH56, I'll try to get some more pics up this week of a couple other bushings that I made. One was with the original washer and sleeve molded into the bushing. As far as the shoulder is concerned, I was thinking that you could just chuck up a hunk of this in a lathe and machine the correct shoulder that you wanted. It wouldn't take that much time. I've been looking for a small machine lathe here in MN, but I don't have a ton of money to invest. I've been watching craigslist, but so far everything's been way too big, or way too expensive. I'm pretty confident that they would machine quite well based on the curling I got from boring the bolt holes on the drill press. A person could probably turn quite a few out in short order. I suppose you could machine the part, then cast a flexible rubber mold for quick and repeatable parts. Then crank them out night and day for the millions of Packard lovers world wide... I might be getting ahead of myself just a bit.

Interesting question. There has been much discussion about this on the AACA website forum under a thread titled "What is your favorite Packard and Why?" The discussion delved into the 39 Super 8 question. O_D is correct about components being similar, but not the same, Bigger brakes, springs, and so on.
