Hemmings?

The Packard Club newsletter(has a classified ad section in the back, wide distribution, seems to be cheap to list).

Cavaliers, granted a 4-door sedan, aren't going for more than $8k unless in pristine running condition, from what I can gather, and have to be in pretty good running condition to even get that.

This one has been advertised for quite a while:

Packard Super Clipper Panam for Sale on Hemmings.

All else being equal, the 359 is significantly lighter and easier to rebuild, and since it has a manifold already set up for a 4-barrel carb, more powerful as well. According to the chart, there are a number of 288 heads which would fit, some would provide lower compression than stock and some higher compression. If the engine was running before at all successfully, it was probably the former. I have no idea, however, how hard it would be to adapt the 356 transmission to the 359, excepting that it must have been done in the past for service-replacement purposes. Kanter appears to have all the parts available for the "master rebuild kit" for the 359, so the pistons, etc. are still available from them, at least.

This is the chart that shows what fits and what compression ratio results:

This is Service Counselor details some of the changes required to swap in a 288/327/359 to a 356 with the mounts switched, probably would be more involved with a 282.

Just for completeness, this is the chart that shows what compression ratio results from mixing and matching various blocks and heads, on this site:

You might also try Max Merrit. They list some as available in their catalog, and even have a 1933-34 starter as one of their "specials"

Re: 1953 Patrician: has anyone updated from Treadlevac to modern 2-chamber mstr cyl?

JeromeSolberg
The short answer is no, at least nothing easy and nothing satisfactory. There is no modern dual master with the combination of small cylinder diameter and long stroke to match the treadle vac, and no way really to mount anything in the firewall. The only thing that really came close was a very elaborate hydrovac installation, which requires a power steering pump and a wholeot of other stuff, from the shop that created the Berendtsen transmission adapters. Other solutions get rid of the fresh air vent, and still have problems.

I know I have investigated a lot. Best just to rebuild the TV and perhaps use Dot 5 (some may differ on the latter point).

But feel free to search on this forum for "Treadle Vac conversion" Easamatic, dual master cylinder, etc.

PB Blaster

Liquid Wrench

SeaFoam Deep Creep

WD-40 is originally formulated as a water-dispersant (that's what the WD stands for). You want something a stronger.

Go the the "Forums"

Go to "postwar" 1946-1954.

At the bottom where it has a search bar, type in "engine hoist" and hit return.

Try also "engine removal" and "transmission removal"
