Re: Addiing power steering

My 51 had bias ply tires when I got it and it handled like an aircraft carrier. It would steer very hard and the tires would squeal on curves. It was white knuckle time every time the road changed direction. The best thing I did was replace the bias ply tires with radials. New shocks didn't hurt handling either but the best thing was the tires. I can now steer with one arm on mountain roads. What a difference.

I am considering adding power steering though. It would make parking a lot easier. I'm not nearly as strong as I used to be.

Does anyone have a source for the trunnion type universals besides the big two or three suppliers? I'm thinking that $175.00 for the body plus $125.00 more for the rebuild kit is too high.

I just replaced the pinion seal on my 51. Can I ask who the supplier is that sold the questionable seal to you. Please email me if you don't think it's proper to respond here.

Thanks,

Quote 39Super8, "I hate to say it, but it's probably best to find a good exhaust shop, buy the proper mufflers & resonators and have them installed."

I agree with 39Super8. There's nothing worse than paying good money for something that isn't right to start with.

kind of thought there would be people who would see the beauty in leaving it alone. You just can't get good bullet holes these days. Makes me think of holes from China. Probably wouldn't fit anyway. If it were really mine I'd just get it running and drive it the way it is. That would be great fun. Can you imagine pulling into Starbucks in it. Would probably replace the wind shield.

Jay said "I noticed a tendency for it to slip out of OD once in a while, but I can live with that."

The only car I ever had with an overdrive was a 1959 Rambler American. As far as I can remember there was a switch that was made when the throttle was pushed to the floor that would cause the over drive to drop out and revert to 3rd gear under. It acted like a passing gear on an automatic. Once you got up to the passing speed you wanted you let up on the gas pedal and it would again shift into over drive. This was also how you got it out of over drive if you wanted it to stay in 3rd under on the fly. You would kick the pedal to the floor and after it came out of over drive you either pulled or pushed, I can't remember, the over drive control to lock it out. If the over drive is dropping out before the pedal is pressed to the floor maybe that switch is out of adjustment. This may be worth looking into.

Re: Gas Smell '56 Caribbean

Her's my two cents worth. I bought a locking gas cap for my 51 and smelled raw gas the next time I took the car out. Gas was sloshing out past the cap on right turns even when the tank was half full. I could see the gas running down the outside of the car as well as down the outside of the filler pipe. Had to put the old cap back on. I got the locking cap from a guy on ebay who represented it as a New Stant cap. It came without a box and was not marked by Stant at all. Paid something like $60.00 for it. The problem was the cap would not go on tight enough for the rubber would seal. I also found that all I had to do was wiggle it a little and it would come off. So much for LOCKING gas cap. When I contacted the seller I was told " I was the only guy to ever complain. E-buyer beware.

I fully agree with everything Rusty O\Toole said. I'll still give you 100 bucks for it and I'll pay for the smog check.
