Re: Radiator Restoration at Hershey

Good morning O.D.

I trust you had a great time at Hershey.

I have contacted a few local radiator repair shops and found that some were not capable of working my radiator. Some of the answers I got were Packard, NOPE can't do it, PACKARD, a what?. Yeah sure bring it in and let me take a look at it.

One fella who was the second generation shop owner who I have known for many years told me if it was a repair, he would do it but not a recore.

I did find one shop about 45 miles away that would do a recore for $ 800.00. Using a "V" fin or $725.00 for a serpentine fin although the size of the serpentine is 1/4 inch narrower that the original. This was from a big time radiator shop in PA.

My next place to try is about 45 minutes in the opposite direction.

I will keep trying and any other suggestions/sources would be appreciated.

Thanks again
Fred D

Radiator Restoration at Hershey

Hello Packard folks.

With Hershey right around the corner would it be advantageous to lug my 1940 120 radiator to Hershey and get it directly to a restoration vendor, it needs to be done anyhow. Or should I research vendors and have it delivered to a recommended shop.

It is presently in NE PA. Does the Packard community have any suggested sources for this radiator restoration. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Fred D

I do not know if they are interchangeable but hopefully the part numbers will help in your search. The 1940 Preliminary Parts book lists: Rear Fender Assy. 342930 for 1800-1-3-4-6-7 for the right side & 342942 also for the 1805-8 Right side. 342931 for 1800-1-3-4-6-7 for the left side & 342943 also for 1805-8 left side.

If you can get Part numbers for the 1941 your problem will be solved.

good luck

Thank you

Awhile back Flackmaster had a discussion about it but I wasn't able to see what I needed from the pictures. I will go back and look again.

Thank you

Hello all

Does anybody have a good picture showing the details for the splash panel on the drivers side from the frame to the motor.

Mine is quite cobbled on the back side but it can be straightened out once I get to know what it should look like.

Thanks Fred

Thanks for the reply.

They are the front drums. They were blasted, powder coated, cut to size, new cups & cones installed. Now I need to check out the seals then store them until I get ready to put it all back together.

Preservation of newly cut brake drums

Hello all

Does anyone have a way to preserve newly cut brake drums for storage until I get to have them installed. It will be quite awhile. The new bearings are greased and seated, but I am concerned about the newly cut surfaces.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I have googled the LOF for the art work however none shown are like the ones on my glass. I know of a company than can make the masks for glass etching, because I have used them in the past to make the masks for wine glasses for my daughters weddings. It is delicate work but using sand and the mask worked exceptionally well.

Having photo artwork is key to a comparable design.

The mask I use only needed masking tape around the edges because of the size of the mask itself and needed no chemicals to remove it.

I will keep you all updated if I can get the artwork
