Really doubt that its not a line installed by the mfg.
Drawing states for the su8 :
DARK GRAY LINE
ABOUT 3/64 WIDE AROUND ALL
UNETCHED SUFACES
FOR PC. #213866-*

Area for the harringbone or whatever states:
BACKGROUND TO ETCHED AS SHOWN AND
COLORED DARK BROWN, ETCHING TO APPROX.
.005 DEEP FOR PC. #213888-*

The "AS SHOWN" area shows the harringbone pattern.

Interesting u cant see any harringbone pattern. Packard drawing has only 3 part numbers (8-su8-12). Wonder if the whatever BROWN is blanking out the harringbone. Maybe the harringbone was only there for an adhere surface for the BROWN stuff?

Always figured the DARK GRAY LINE STRIP was done by hand but it looks to even for that.

If u blow this photo up u can see the DARK GRAY LINE around the harringbone so pretty sure we can say this is an orig untouch plate considering the fine originality of the rest of the car.

Heres a crazy thought - Wonder if they were trying to match the dark brown on the steeing wheel and radio knobs?
Just hit me that '33 didnt have a Brown Steering Wheel. Radio was an option so its a long shot they were thinking of matching the Knobs. Bottom line is this is a bad idea.

AND is this su8 DARK BROWN a chemical thing or is it paint? One would have to assume they had paint out to do the strip line so why not paint for the harringbone. Dwg just state "COLORED DARK BROWN" and nothing about how. For '12' states "OXIDIZED" for its insert.

Tim - Have u seen under one of the '34 Crests and there is a DARK BROWN?
With all the restored plates out there that just have the harringbone in a natural, im wondering if the "COLORED DARK BROWN" was noting the color of the material used and it never did get a chemical treatment; seems like the su8 matl is a copper vrs the 8&12 which looks like brass. Whats makes me wonder this is the plate for the '12' is the only one that states "OXIDIZED" - 8 states "NICKEL FINISH" - su8 is the "COLORED DARK BROWN". If there was a chemical treatment is must have been a light one that came off with a light rub because there are so many that are just the copper and if it was orig. natural it would have gotten darker with age.
Guessing this is one of those things we will never know forsure. ITS FUN TO SPECULATE !!!!!!

PACKARD Dwgs. state the harringbone on the 33/4 Su8 Inst. Pl. is to be "COLORED DARK BROWN". I figure the best place to I.D. what the brown is under the Packard Crest on the 34 Radio Finishing Plate. Has anyone got a look at this area and what did u find?

B. TUBE ASSY

C. FILTER heres a green one w/decal that just went on the bay

-Is there a virgin engine out there that can tell us A & B
-My take on filters for '33 up is when they left the factory they were green. When they got a filter change they came out of the box black. BUT IVE BEEN WRONG BEFORE.

Cam Bearing hole

Anyone tell me what the orig. size of the oil feed hole was in the rear cam bearing on a 626. Assume other models up to '31 were the same.

NEVER MIND. Finally got it out a can now see whats going on. Dam thing was glued in place and did not want to move. I was afraid of pulling aluminum with the bearing, it was stuck so bad, but it finally gave me a little movement and the rest is history.
