Thanks for the helpful information. Didn't realize there was supposed to be a rubber gasket..... Just a little searching....and found this online listing for one.....
which I bought....will post more when it arrives and if it cures the problem of the rotating top piece.....

Rotating Air Cleaner.....'55 Patrician

Does anyone have this same problem? The air cleaner on my '55 Patrician rotates from its center position while driving.... Only the top portion of the air cleaner does it....the bottom stays secure in its position. Its an original oil bath air cleaner, my carb is an original Rochester CG.... I try and avoid tightening the wing nut too tight so as not to warp the carb internals.... Is there supposed to be a "keyway" or slot that the top piece fits into the bottom to keep it from rotating?

1955/1956 Packard V8 New in Crate...Craigs List Ad....

Listed on Criags List....might be worth checking out...if the seller would put a reasonable realistic price on this...was most likely a replacement engine... The ad is rather ambiguous...(1956 engine for a 1955 Nash?) and stating its bill of sale from a "Nash" dealer is dated 1960, when of course by then all the dealers would have been AMC/Rambler....but if its a new engine still in the crate, they dont come along every day.....

Listed For Sale: 1955 Patrician with 1956 Side Trim

Posted For Sale on this site (in the For Sale section), my rather rare 1955 Packard Patrician. What makes this rather rare is its a late in the year model build car with 1956 side trim, that appears to be either factory built or dealer installed. Anyone on this site have any experiences or info of late in the year model builds with '56 trim or parts? The previous owner of this car gave me a letter from The Packard Club in Oakland CA verifying that a few late model year '55's were in fact built with '56 trim. Whether this is factory built or dealer installed is not known and hence any information of others experiences/sitings of cars of this nature would be helpful.....Jimmy S. Akron, Ohio
