Re: Cleaning a O/D governor

Yes. Some of us have used channel lock type pliers ground down to make the jaws thinner as a tool to loosen the governor for removal and to tighten it when replacing. A special size spanner wrench was probably originally used back in the day, but the pliers work. We have found the governors are not too tight when removing because of the large diameter and fine thread of the portion that screws into the OD unit.

You guys beat me to the reply. Quick work.

Sometimes one can just firmly grab the governor and unscrew it without using any tools.

An easy and quick check would be with a 6V battery and two leads (ground and power). Simply attach the ground lead to the base of a bulb and the power lead to one of the terminals. Then do the other terminal. You should be able to tell which is the low and high beam filament by brightness.

What series/year were you able to determine from the engine number?

I have heard that the first series Twin Sixes did not have detachable cylinder heads.

I can't recommend a horn repairer but do recommend a battery cut-off switch to prevent another electrical short circuit incident.

It was common practice back then for autos to only have wind lacing around the door openings. Gaskets came along later, but the wind lacing remained as a way to trim the openings.

Bob J offers a comprehensive explanation of the distributor advance functions. A quick and easy way to check is to remove the cap and see if you can wiggle the rotor back and forth. If the rotor wiggles, then the mechanical advance is probably working.

I once had a car where the mechanical advance mechanism became rusted and would not function. After cleaning and servicing the mechanism work and made a completely different performing engine.

Some with vintage cars with fog/driving lights use them for daylight driving lights when out and about.

Is Empire in El Paso still taking orders for their custom cast aluminum heads?

Ross, beautiful eye candy. My father had a customer who had him install an Edmunds dual carb kit on his 52 Mayfair. As I recall it ran well, but probably little improvement in performance. Looked great, though.

I that my formerly owned 55 Clipper Super Sedan in the background? I understand it went back to Maryland a few years ago. Neat car and fast too.
