Re: Advice on removing engine?

Ross' advice to remove the whole front clip to aid engine removal is spot on. I've pulled a 352 out of a '55 400 parts car without removing the front clip, and getting that behemoth engine out over the grille/radiator was a whole bunch of no fun. Putting it back in was much easier after removing the doghouse.

Jack's advice of removing the rocker arms and cleaning them out is also good advice. I was shocked how much was sludged up in there. Also the freeze plug replacement is a must.

Also, check out the oil pump drive shaft from bottom of distributor and check how much play/wear you have in it.

There is a packard convertible at the 1:54 mark of the video. Any ideas as to the year and type?

1930's video Beverly Hills Packard.

This video was taken in Beverly Hills during the 1930's. Besides the fact that everybody seemed to drive wherever they wanted to with no lanes, there is a Packard that pulls up on the right and follows the camera car for awhile. It had dual side mounts, and the recognizable Packard grille.

Anybody want to take a stab at what year and series this Packard is?

Also, pay attention to the Huge rolls royce. Neat cars.

Quote:
A V8 as early as '53 or even '52 would have been helpful but I very much doubt it would have changed the ultimate outcome, just too many negative economic and market forces both internal to Packard and external for them to overcome.

It's just a theory, but some of the 320/352 V-8 problems & Twin Ultramatic issues might have been worked out by the new '55 body styles. Also, the 374 would have come out by '53-'54.

The news station video shows them pushing out a '55 or '56 Chrysler. Of all the cars to survive.

It's always sad to see so many cars come to an end like this. They survived everyday life, hurricanes, scrap drives, junkyards, and to end up like this?

Here's an old article out of HotRod magazine about a local Oregon man who raced his '56 Packard.

Wow. Glad to hear more wasn't damaged. You're right about the bank vault door/packard door comparison. I once had a hood fly open on me in a '53 Chevy 210 at 60mph. It bent the hood over the roof, smashed the windshield and believe me, unlike you my pants were not dry by the time I got it stopped.

Is it just the outer skin around the hinges that got smooshed?
