Re: Shoulder and Lap Belts

There is a photo of the body parts in the 1946-1950 Shop Manual. It is a small image, but may be useful. I just hate to strip off the trim with so little knowledge as it is original.

Bandon, I have been following PackardV8's thread on the install of the belts in his '55. What I would like to find out is, if anyone has done this on a 21st or 22nd series car, how they fastened the shoulder belt anchor to the door post. PackardV8 posted a photo of his door post stripped of the trim. I was just wondering what the structure of the door post on the earlier cars looks like. I do not want to take the trim off of my '47 without knowing what is underneath. Maybe a body manual will give me some information.

Kevin, I have an original Packard Service Manual for 1946 -1950. I notice that this manual is not on the site. It is a large publication, probably 500 pages. It is comprehensive and can be useful to those with these cars. There should be no copyright issues since it is not a reproduction. I would be willing to lend it to you to scan and place in the literature and manuals section. The scanning will be a huge job. Interested?

Shoulder and Lap Belts

Has anyone installed a set of modern type shoulder and lap belts in their 21st or 22nd Series Packard? If so, could you please share what it took to do the installation, and where you got your belts. The shoulder and lap belt combination seem, to me, to me a better solution than just lap belts. Thanks.

Okay, here I go one more time (just couldn't leave it alone). If the new universal coils are marked so that the positive marked (+) terminal is for the source (switch) and the negative marked (-) terminal is for the distributor, then there is no problem regarding the vehicle's battery ground, if connections are made according to these terminal markings. If this is not the care, then we are back to trying to determine which terminal is to the primary winding.

Regarding my comments about using a meter to check for secondary output. It was a Sun Equipment instrument and I believe one knob setting was marked "Secondary Resistance". We used this setting with one of the leads on the spark plug terminal and the other on ground (vehicle ground dependent, of course) to check for faulty high tension leads (spark plug wires) with the engine running. The test could also be used for other trouble shooting purposes like coil leads hooked-up backwards.

Dave, I just ordered a copy of the book from Amazon. Looking forward to reading it.

PackardV8, I was referring to modern type 3-point lap and shoulder belts with inertia reels. They are available from vendors. These are much better than just lap belts which most owners install. Your suggestion about the shoulder belt anchor is a good one, thanks.

greendragon I apologize referring to you as HH56. HH56, I apologize for confusing you with greendragon. HH56, thank you for your article references. I'll stick with my edit comments as that is how we used to check for secondary output and coil connections. Bye.

PackardV8, what is the year and model of the car you have pictured? I have been thinking about installing modern type 3-point seat belts in my Clipper, but reluctant to take any of the interior trim off of the door post. Attaching the anchor on the door post is the difficult part. Your photo shows possible anchor points nicely. The belts are available in different lengths from an after market vendor I saw at Laguna Seca a few years ago. Thanks.
