Dave, A large size cotter pin shaped like a slanted "T" can be fabricated to be used to roll out the bearing shell. If you decide to try the job without removing the transmission. You are right, this work is not as much fun as it used to be. Good luck.

Nice engine compartment Carl. My '47 Custom Clipper has a similar lower radiator hose arrangement. I painted the pipe engine color. This may not be totally correct, but it looks nice. I also painted the fuel pump heat shield engine color. It shows better than the previous black.

I recommend Classic Car Motor Oil. It is a multi-viscosity 15W40. It is a specially formulated with 1600 ppm ZDDP. The API service category is SH, SJ, SL. It is for older flat tappet engines for which the new oils are not compatiable. It is sold through the Indiana Region of the Classic Car Club of America. To order phone: 317-225-0040 or go to www.classiccarmotoroil.com. I am using it in my 1937 Six and 1947 Custom Clipper.

packardlibrary.com --- Have I been missing this, or is it a new site? Either way, a great source for Packard information.

Carl, I would say that whatever you can do to get as much oil circulating in the engine as soon as possible at the lowest rotation rate would be my preferred method. Cars driven frequently would not need the care in starting as those that sit for long periods of time.
Continuing with the electric fuel pump subject. Why complicate your life with an electric fuel pump if one is not needed? There may be situations where one is needed, but I think those would be rare. As our dear friend Dave often states about electric fuel pumps, 12-volt conversions, electric radiator cooling fans, and other remedies: These things are work arounds for trying to solve a problem without dealing with the core issue. As an old mechanic friend of mine said about one of his peers: "He tends to fix things rather than repair them." Keep up the work on your 300.
