Ok, just an observation from the first picture posted, and I think that the copied specs mentioned a "groove". I assume that the knurled end of the clip fits into a groove cut into the post to stop it from allowing it to slide off of the post. Is the groove still present? If so, is it deep enough to allow the clip to bite into it? Take a hacksaw and deepen the groove.
It's probably a matter of the square orafice on the handle is not truly square anymore (due to usage and it being cast soft metal), and it's allowing the handle to rotate on the post/shaft and that clip is losing it't bite. Remove the other door handle and see how that looks. Good luck! Mark Added... Although, looking at the clip, what allows it to bite/grip the handle orafice??? Maybe putting the clip on another side of the post would work.

If you post a picture, maybe we could brainstorm an alternative solution. ...one that would hold.
Good luck, Mark

The factory suggestion was to run a 288 head on the 327 engine to increase compression ratio, wasn't it? Didn't it garner a half a point increase on compression ratio?
Good luck! Mark

...just chiming back in.
I don't claim to be a "knowledge base" on Packards or the company. I just know what I've read, and I saw this and passed it along. I found the references to the merger interesting. One thing that I always keep in mind when I read a piece is that there are usually two sides to a story. ...and I don't know about anyone else, but at 44 (I am not claiming to be young or old) I can't remember conversations and sequence to events 5 years ago, let alone 30 years ago. So I don't necessarily take things as fact. ...as fo the discussion about Packard surviving and in what state of existence... I'll let you guys hammer that one out. ![]() Mark

Hemmings Motor News June issue reprint of Romney interview...

Hi all,
I didn't see anyone post it here... The June issue of Hemmings has a reprint of an SIA (Special Interest Auto) interview with George Romney. It looks like the original interview was published in 1981. In the interview, Romney talks about his start and time at AMC, and how a merger with Packard was dropped. Here is the interview online. -->http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2010/04/04/sia-flashback-sia-interview-with-george-romney/

Hi,
In the process of shipping things to the chromer. I'm trying to determine if these brackets should be chromed. They are behind the grill on the 22/23rd series. I'm thinking that they shouldn't be chromed. Thanks, Mark

Delux,
Did you check the metering rod height with a metering rod gauge? I can't recall which gauge number off of the top of my head. If the rod heigh is mis-adjusted you could be running rich. I have tried many sources and old-timers and have had no luck finding a gauge. If anyone has one, I'd be interested a tracing of it. So to fabricate one. I have a gauge of a different size. Here is a picture: http://www.cj3a.info/tech/meter.html Also-Didn't the 22nd-23rd 288 & 327's come with Carter WDO's? Would a WGD run richer with different jets in it? Good luck! Mark

The video of Jay showing the application of it may be in David's link above. But here it is. They just "hose" it on like water. ...no careful spraying at all.

Thanks for everyone's input! I checked out the specs on the paint for Hirsch. ...and spoke to a couple of other Packard owners. I will go with the Hirsch paint.
But, I'm still confused at which color my block should be. I have a 2271-9-xxxx (22nd series) Super 8. I thought that I read that the 22nd series were grey engines. I thought that I read it on Packardinfo, but I can't find it. When I look at the www.packardclub.org it shows: Year: Engine: Color: 1900 - 1914 All Engines Black 1915 - 1939 Twelves Green [Note: 1] 1918 - 1947 Sixes & Eights Green [Note: 1] 1948 - 1954 All Engines Gray [Note: 2] except 1954 359 CID which were Bronze. I know that I've seen way too many 48's & 49's with green engines for the above to be true. So which color should my 22nd super 8 be??? ![]() I apologize if this has been covered in another topic. Thanks! Mark
