Re: what oil should I use in my 53 Clipper?

Thank you all so much for the information. I think I will go with 10-30. Then I can go to an oil change place. I don't change oil myself. I bought a 4 ft hose from Auto Zone to attach to my funnel and put in the fill hole under the car so I can put transmission fluid in my Clipper, Dex 3, 4 or 5, I've been told. It is a 94 Mercedes tranny (rebuilt Ultramatic with Mercedes clutch place and torque converter with passing gear).

What kind do you recommend for old cars? I have a good oil filter

The previous owner always used 30w but it is a rebuilt engine with about 40,000 on it. Am I safe to use 10w30 or should I stay with 30w? I live in Southern California and the temp. never gets below 40 degrees in the winter, stays mostly 60-80 degrees. The oil change stations always use 10w30. Your advise is very appreciated. I always trust and verify.

Hi, What is the Packard color of your car in your signature? There are 3 Packard blues. My 53 Clipper is the dark blue, like yours...what color would that be?

I had the same problem when my 53 Clipper was asleep for 7 1/2 years. The tow truck driver took out the cotter pin in the linkage and moved it back 2 positions to be able to move the car out of the garage onto the tow truck. Once it moved I guess the problem solved because he put it back as it was supposed to be and since then no problem.

If it is leaking gasoline then go to a carburetor shop and they will have the small pellet that goes there. It is tiny. We just put it in and tapped it with a hammer to drive it in. No more leak. He didn't charge me a penny for it. Now I will use him when I do get it rebuilt. I found that auto parts don't have this fix, only a carb shop.

WEll I have spent too much time trying to get the photo of this tiny plug on here and I'm done. Picture a tine pellet. That is what it looked like.

How to patch the hole in your carburetor

Well after going to Napa and 2 other places who didn't know how to plug the gas leak from the carb I was directed to a good Carburetor Shop. I texted him the photo and he said come over and I will give you the part. He graciously handed me 2 of these little guys and my mechanic tapped it into the hole and after setting the points my 1953 Clipper Deluxe started right up and purrs like a kitten! I drove her to the car wash, washed her by hand, and saw how absolutely beautiful she is. I have never felt these feelings. I am driving a 64 year old incredibly beautiful car. the engine is so clean you could eat off it. The rebuilt transmission, with all Mercedes parts including passing gear, has only 6,000 miles on it. The previous owner said the tires spin if I step on the gas too hard with all her power. It took me almost 8 months to pay her off but I knew I had to have her the instant I saw her in his garage. She had been asleep for 7 1/2 years. It was hard for him to let her go but when it was time I entered the picture and he happily sold her to me. Now all fluids are new, she is clean and waiting for new tires, just like in the brochure in 1953. She is dark blue, don't know the Packard color, almost navy with blue grey wool interior. Both previous owners had her for 32 years in Palm Springs and La Palma, CA. I plan on being around well into my 100's so I guess I'll have her that long too! I'm learning how to attach photos. One is the hole and the other will be the plug.

You are right. I believe I asked the question as a reply to another post and wanted the Subject line to gather more replies to my question. Now I know how it works.

When I start my Clipper Deluxe gas squirts out of this hole. I am repeating this post because I don't see it here after I tried to post a photo. Is there a part that goes into this hole to stop gas from squirting out. It is not threaded and there is another one on the other side of the carb that does not leak.
