Mark,

Since you are considering a 22nd/23rd Series Packard, it is a buyer market. Do yourself a favor, take your time, hold out for the very BEST car you can find for the money, even if you have to have it shipped to you.

As context and for perspective on what has been available, here is a link to a 1949 Eight Deluxe that was for sale in Colorado for a few years until the seller finally dropped the price significantly. Others like it turn up periodically.

https://forums.aaca.org/topic/353363-for-sale-1949-packard-eight-deluxe-12500-longmont-co-not-mine-still-available-price-reduced-to-8000-november-2021/#comment-2291486

Better cars trade between club members so join one or both Packard clubs and start networking if you haven't already. Dealers, unless they happen to be one of the reputable ones, don't know the cars, are only after the profit, the problems are yours after the Packard is off their lot.

Hope this helps, good luck in your search.

Wonderful restoration, perseverance pays off! It looks like most 1940 One-Sixty sedans would have on the street when new. Drive and enjoy it a lot!

Indeed, this auction is an opportunity for younger collectors and enthusiast to get their first Packard.

But, the proviso is these are typical Northeast cars that have suffered the vicissitudes of copious moisture and hard winter exposure. Most all will need restoration in all aspects, mechanical, steel metal, paint, chrome trim and upholstery. Select the best you can from the lots.

For those with deep pockets and the desire to have the choicest: Lot 39 and 111 are the basis for recreating a 1941 180 LeBaron Sport Brougham, one of the 99 last series-custom LeBaron bodied Packards. It has the best proportions of all 1941 Packards, recognized as the most desirable Packard next to the Darrins.

If you buy a car or cars, please tell us and show us your acquisition(s), we'll all like to see it.

Hi

At certain times in automotive history, the public has been open to embracing new body styles. The decade after WWII was one of those times. In the lower-priced fields it was the all-steel station wagon, first the two door then the four door dominating with the rise of the suburbs.

The other major new style was the B-pillarless hardtop. The style embodies all the carefree spirit of a convertible without the drawbacks. Once the public had experience it in two door form, it wasn't a major conceptual leap to expect a four door version. This was an opportunity for the first carmaker to present such to the market, well before GM did in mid-1955.

As Paul has presented, the first step toward that ultimate four door hardtop could have been a hardtop-styled four door sedan with the same thin, chromed window frames, low-roof line and interiors found in the two door hardtops. It simply took the vision of designers and the willingness of management to make it happen.
