Thanks a bunch fellas ... and for good measure - my red pedal is not the clutch - it's the brake ! Maybe a yesteryears' mechanic way of saying he removed the P.I.A. electromatic !! BigT

Yes , my car does have a red clutch. I've been wandering about that ! So, when there was an electromatic unit - does this mean that the starter solenoid and the starter would not be visible ( in the top pic ) - or have an obstructed view ? Also ,
I just assumed that the switch to the left of the OD switch and above the trinagular plate was the kickdown switch ??? Thanks for all the knowledge ! BigT

So , if Ive got this right , then this car probably had an electromatic clutch at one time - but no longer. And it has an R 9 overdrive unit. Is there an electrical switch associated with the manual cable under the dash ? Thanks , BigT

As I get to know our 48 Super 8 a little better ... I'm still a little perplexed about the tranny. The manual overdrive cable definitely works - as the car seems to free-wheel ( no engine drag when I let off on the gas ). But what does the "trans" switch on the instrument panel do ? I don't detect any noticeable sound or change in feel of the car when I push this switch. Is it an option that doesn't exist on my car ? a faulty switch ? neither ? And how would I differentiate between an R9 and an R11 ? Just a start to a plethera of trans ?'s. Thanks , BigT

Does this G415571 correspond to a 2272 chassis. Or does this mean that this motor is not the original one ? And by the way - WOW - what a gold mine of information all you guys are !! Thanks again , BigT

Another VIN question

I'm on the verge of buying a 48 Super Eight. The # on the cowl plate is 2272 9428. The number on the driver side motor ( I can't remember if it was on the head or the block ) was 389719327. Now I'm told that the VIN # on the title is G415571. Where is this number on the car or motor and what do its' digits mean ( if anything ) ? Thanks , BigT

I'm looking @ buying a 48 Packard ( don't know anything about them ) but it looks to be in very good shape - all original - and runs pretty well. The eng # is 389719327 and the cowl # is 2272 9428. Do these #'s idicate the model name ( there seem to be alot of combos in the naming system ) ? I'm a little concerned about the way the car hovers up front when driving. But the front shocks look to be at the top of the springs. Are these rebuildable / replaceable ? and how big of a job is that ? Any other suggestion as to what to look for in the way of potential problems would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks , BigT
