Re: Inside fender colors

Our 38 Super Eight coupe had original body color under the front fender. Can't remember rears as they were rusty and didn't pay attention. We choose to paint both front and rear fenders with black Tex Coat from Transtar. Its a chip guard spray which gets really hard and looks good. Expensive ($25 per can) and have to be very careful when used as very hard to remove from painted surfaces. One plus can per rear fender, two for front ( we hope as yet to do). We purchased from auto paint supplier. I suppose the original fender underside was painted the body color because it was faster and cheaper. I felt that our body paint would have been too expensive and hard to work with under the fender and not be as protective. Inside the engine compartment we painted body color on most of the exposed panels but not all. Another decision. Good luck.

1938 Super eight running board and trim

Which is the proper way to install the running board rubber - over the entire outside edge of the board with the trim installed over the rubber, or, the rubber installed just over the top edge and the trim below with paint below the trim. When we obtained our car the old rubber appeared to be all the way down (no trim remaining)

Any help in finding bright metal exterior windshield trim for our 1938 Super Eight would be appreciated. Ours is not in good enough shape to fix. Any possible substitutes?

Re: 1938 Super Eight 2-4 coupe storage bin lock

Thanks for the reply. The "bin" lock is not the golf bag door lock but is in the lid to a storage bin behind the front seats and in front of the rear window of the 2+2 coupe. We have not located any release hole or other means to separate the lock, which needs to be removed to complete inside restoration. The retaining nut has been loosened but cannot be removed as it is blocked by the locks latch. The nut could be cut and the lock probably could be worked out with out separating but then reinstalling is another problem.

Trying to remove lock from bin lid behind the front seat. No pin holes found. Locksmith said it might be pressed on. Retaining nut has been loosened but can't be removed so lock will not pass through hole in lid due to lock construction. Lock needs to be separated from pull grip/keyway. Don't want to destroy lock or lid. Entire lock set needs to be removed for new fabric. Any help greatly appreciated.

Re: pressure test radiator

Thanks everybody. I really appreciate all the advice. Didn't know for sure that my system was not pressurized. Well, didn't know at all. We did have the radiator standing with water for several days and didn't find any leaks which is why I thought a simple pressure test might find a pin hole. We also have flushed several times. After reviewing the comments I will now take to the radiator shop for one final check before installing on the engine - which is on a stand - and start our test running. Thanks again. Hope in the future I can help out somebody.

My 1938 super eight radiator has inside slots for cap to fit. Most testers that I've looked at have flanges that fit in slots on the outside of radiator fill neck. Any one know where to find adapter or whatever? I'm trying to test radiator for leaks under pressure before installing. Any help appreciated.

Re: Converting 1938 2+2 coupe back to original rumble seat

I probably wasn't too clear about restoring the rumble seat. The car is a 1938 super eight model 1604 body style 1118. The original rumble seat was removed and replaced with a trunk. The sheet metal below the rumble seat was cut out and welded to the rumble seat door and attached to car (ugly) to form a trunk lid. We have a replacement rumble seat door and original brackets which have been mounted to the car to fit in the original rumble seat opening. My question concerns the replacement of the sheet metal decking below the rumble seat and what water drainage should be considered. Originally the car must have had something to handle water that got around the molding. We noted a drain line below the rear roll down window (original?). We need to clarify before completing the replacement sheet metal on the rear decking.
