Thanks for the help. Guess I set them to start as Ross suggested to be safe, then do the finals after it's running.

I can adjust them with a couple of 1/2" wrenches.

Ross, thanks.

You said:
"The manual was written for the 51s so the 300 meant a 327 with 5 mains, though they had hydraulic lifters."

Mine's a 327 with 5 mains, should it have hydraulic lifters?

Also do you have a head water outlet (5.0508) and associated parts?

Thanks,
Joe

54 327 lifter adjustment

My 327 has adjustable lifters so I'm presuming they are mechanical. The service manual says the adjustment should be made with the engine fully warmed up. My question is what should I set them to initially?

On a side note, the manual talks about the 200 & 300 engine. Is the '300' engine the 327?

Thanks,
Joe

Marston,

Thanks for the reply. Type F seems to be the best consensus, and your experience cinches it for me, so I'll go with it.

Thanks,
Joe

And no problem on the response time, the tranny's just sitting on the garage floor waiting for the engine to be reassembled anyway.

Ultramatic ATF

I've been researching what ATF to use for my 54 ultramatic (early type). There seems to be a consensus on using Type F because Type A is not available. This is stated in Brian's article 'ULTRAMATIC: What Fluid to Use'.

However I came across Accel 22800 Type A ATF being sold on Amazon. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks,
Joe

Thank you all for the prompt response. I will look into the Hollander Interchange Manual. I have looked through the parts lists, but they aren't very straight forward on what goes on what, at least not to me. (EDIT- I just found the '48-54 Plates' book, that helps a bit)

I'm finding that the generators are easier to come by than the starters as they seem to be much more universal. There is currently a reconditioned starter on ebay, but with cost+shipping+core... Well ouch! There was a good cross reference in the ad though.

I picked up a carb that is missing a choke cover. I figured the choke cover would be fairly interchangeable between carter carbs, but that search still continues.

Also does anyone know what year fenders, bumpers and grilles are interchangeable with the 54 clipper?

Thanks again,
Joe

Does anyone know of a reliable source to find out what parts are interchangeable between models? For example, I need a starter and generator for a 54 327. I'd like to know if all the delco generators from 48-54 will work without modification. Even better, is there ford or chevy generators that would work?

Being new to Packard restoration, this kind of information would be invaluable.

Thanks,
Joe
