Thanks,very generous.
Wish I could afford to just buy all the best new stuff, but have to try to economize. If you're a Kanter from Kanter...I have an order for the cluster gear rollers, rear seal and gasket set written up in front of me for you guys! Pretty damn, in fact positive I have a Packard box, as I am elbows deep in the thing and everything else matches up. I will get the numbers tomorrow, the box case numbers are readable as I have cleaned, blasted and painted the box. I have the gear lever and top assembly here with me for now Pictures enclosed until I get case numbers. Thanks again.

'35-'38 Topshift Clutch and Rear Bearings

Just received NOS # 304124. 3.2281, and # 304123. 3.2091 as advertised from a Packard guy off eBay. The numbers, per manuals and parts lists match up to the box that I am 99% sure (it's an orphan) I have. The original boxes have recent labels taped over the original parts numbers, but CLEARLY DO NOT FIT. Before I try to get a refund...were the topshift cane lever '35-'38 boxes the same throughout the range? The bearings are small for the shafts, no way are they right.
It's my understanding that the '35-'38 boxes are pretty unique to themselves and mine looks JUST like the illustrations in the '35-'41 manuals with the cane shift and large flat shift cover base. Want to be sure before I try to get a refund, the guy didn't even combine ship, but packed in the same flat rate box. Grrr. Hate eBay sometimes. Thanks.

Looking for the "Perfect" Packard Engine Paint

This Packard engine color (see photo) makes want to cry it's so gorgeous. I know Hirsch, Kanter, etc. offer engine enamels, but it's pretty hard from color charts and photos to pin the right color down. I m painting a '37 tranny and want to do it once and right. Any experiences preferences etc.? The original paint had been covered by a maroon, and the traces were hard to determine.
Thanks!

1937 Topshift ' Box Update new guy...Wow

First off thanks for the responses to my previous post, and the heartwarming welcome.
So after the water/rust damage to the gearbox, tear down and inspection, I thought for sure the mainshaft was toast, the inner and outer synchronizer sleeves were worrisome, but I felt everything else was salvageable. One word...Evaporust. The web said wonders about this stuff, including Hot Rod magazine, other forums/blogs...and wow did it deliver. Pretty cheap too. I am wary about snake oil, but this melted the iron oxide off like butter after an hour or two. The mainshaft freed up, and the steel was bright without removing the hardening. I think the box is saved! So I am pickling everything in oil after I do final cleaning and deburring. The gears show normal wear, and the case has been cleaned, blasted and primed. Final judgement before I assemble will come after a thorough inspection, but I am psyched.

Thanks for the responses and welcome.
The site is terrific, as I downloaded all the service manuals and tech bulletins regarding this transmission. I suppose in the end I can see if the mainshaft core is viable to be reconditioned, of course I peruse eBay to see if I can get lucky. Hoping to avoid the 650 expenditure from Kanter or Max Merritt, but if I have to pony up I will. So far things are cleaning up nicely, but boy, what is up with the universal joint nut? I know Packard made a special thin wall socket to get these off, what a pain in the you-know-what! Can you adapt a modern u-joint carrier to these boxes? Jeez...

1937 topshift transmission rebuild issues new guy

Grew up in a junkyard (oh the cars we saw come and go...)I have had the trans since I was 16, 38 years, and after keeping it safe all this time, water got in the box and mixed with the lube. Most of the gears are salvageable and merely stained. I put it on the bench and tore her down using the manuals (and a fair bit of experience)as my guide.
I have laid out everything tagged and bagged ready for cleaning and detailing, and ultimately reassembly. The big snag and worst damage is to the mainshaft of course, which is an assembly and I doubt I can save due to corrosion of synchro ring and bearings. It could make a good core for Kanter or someone to rebuild, about 650, bit rich for me at the moment. Do other mainshafts cross reference or any advice about reconditioning? I feel I owe it to the old gearbox to try and save it, after failing to keep it safe, plus I enjoy the project. Thanks.
