valve guides

Does anyone have any helpful ideas about removing seized exhaust valve guides in a 51 Packard 327? I've been using the correct guide driver but the guides won't budge at all. I'm worried about damaging the top end of the guide or cracking the block. Engine is in chassis.

broken top compression ring

Have pulled the head and pistons from my 51 Patrician which had low compression on one cylinder and found very bad exhaust valve seat. I have found 4 or 5 top compression rings broken. What would cause this ring to break? Also, I was using non-detergent oil in this engine, but now that it's apart and cleaned out (in chassis), I am considering using detergent oil with a zinc additive. Any ideas regarding broken ring and oil issues? Thanks

Wayne

I'm performing a valve job on my 51 Packard Patrician 400 with hydraulic valve lifters and see that there is special tool used when checking the lash clearance. This tool fits on top of the tappet and is listed as tool J2553 or J4540. Is there an alternative method as I don't have this tool? Does anyone know the size specs of this tool? Thanks Wayne
