These are great replies. Thanks guys. I will look into the possibility of having my son the cabinet maker make me some shims. I had no idea that this was a common practice back in the day.

Another question from a brand new Packard owner.

My Packard has low miles and the upholstery is in immaculate condition. It does not appear to have been reupholstered. My question is how much headroom/seat height is normal in one of these cars? I'm 6"2", and it seems to me that I'm sitting rather low in relation to the windshield. I can drive it and everything okay, but it just seems like I'm not seated up as high as I feel like I should be. My wife is 5'4", and she has trouble seeing out the front windshield at all from the passenger side.

Thanks. I added the year and model to the subject line.

I will check the adjustments, per your instructions.

Thanks again.

Another newbie question:

Should the engine respond rather promptly to your foot when you press on the accelerator pedal? It it seems like mine has to be almost all the way to the floor before it really gets enough fuel to get going. Is this a linkage or adjustment issue? This is a freshly rebuilt Carter WDO carburetor that, otherwise, seems to work fine. Fuel pump is also freshly rebuilt.

Hello again. I'm here with another neophyte question:

Where is the date code stamped on my 1949 288 engine? Search as I might, I cannot find any posts indicating WHERE to look for it.

Thanks for your help.

Re: 1949 Custom Eight Fuel Pressure

I just installed a freshly rebuilt fuel pump on my '49 with a 288. It was pumping out 5-6 psi. Took it for a drive and it stalled out after a bit (still trying to determine why - been chasing it), so I installed an inline regulator and dialed it back to 3-3.5 psi and drove it again. Same problem. Frustrating!

Monday, I am going to set up a direct feed to the pump from a clean can of gas, get it running, and try again. If the problem goes away, it MUST be somewhere in the pickup tube in the tank or in the long steel back-to-front fuel line.

So - the Kanter mirrors aren't correct for the 22nd series, correct?

Correct Outside Rear View Mirrors for 22nd Series Deluxe Eight Touring Sedan?

Hello all!

New owner of a 1949 22nd series Deluxe Eight Touring Sedan. I'm wondering if the outside rear view mirror - I only have one - is correct.

The first picture is what it came with.

The second is one I found online that matches the modern reproduction mirrors advertised as being correct for that model, as seen in picture number 3.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I've searched all the other posts about side mirrors and it would appear that I have an aftermarket something, and that my Packard possibly didn't come with one at all when it was new so it was added later.

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but, being new to Packard's, I'm wondering why not use a modern style seal, rather than a rope seal?
