Thanks BigKev. I assumed the Directory was a listing of members, not businesses. My Bad!

I've got the Thermostat Blues!

I thought changing out the thermostat would be a nice, straightforward task as a first job with the newly acquired 1950, 2301 Regular Eight Touring Sedan. (I will register soon) When the housing was removed there was no retaining collar present! I am therefore looking to acquire one or an entire subsystem. Kanter does not have any nor a one-piece replacement they once offered. They gave me a part number PAC 348537. Might there be dimensions available to have machined into existence?

On this www.Packardonfo.com does a list of qualified vendors exist for when a search like this is required? Amazon and ebay also do not have these parts. What are your thoughts on a modern one-piece system? Does one exist for this car? I humbly ask for your assistance in helping locate what I need to get my 'blooper' back on the road. I want this car to be a regular driver and not a show car.

I believe these are the part numbers taken off a Packard Parts List from this site:

Thermostat housing - 5.0508

Thermostat - 5.0506

Retaining Collar - 5.0507

Gasket (paper?) - 5.0509 (Should I consider a cork gasket as the mating surface of the housing is a bit rough?)

Thank you very much.

Change the bulb. I figured out how to remove the bulb(s) and replace. I was quite nervous to break off the tabs. While the bulbs worked for running and directional lights both brake light filaments were bad. I am good to go in this area. Off to replacing many other bulbs.

Thank you for sharing your experience with me.

This thread is basically pursuing a rebuilding of the rear light housing. Do you need to do the same to just change the bulb?

Light Bulb Designation, Vendors that Sell

Greetings Packardites!

I just purchased a 1950 (49) 2301 Eight Touring Sedan and more than a couple of frustrating electrical issues are in need of investigation. In researching, I find some conflicting information. For example I have brake light issues (don't work) and I find that the Owners Operational Manual states the bulb is a #1158 while the 1948-1954 Packard Parts List states it is #1154. I have found the #1154 but can't find the #1158.

Where can I learn to replace the rear lights? I have looked for a 'Chilton' type repair manual but to my knowledge this issue is not published...or at least I have not found it. Does the bulb get removed directly from the housing via the trunk or does the housing need to get unbolted from the trunk to gain access to the bulb? I see the 'tab' coming off the bulb but i have not been willing to really 'wank' hard on this tab as it could break and be a permanent part of the system. I must be missing something.

Please share with me your thoughts. Thank you very much.

Thank you HR56! I located the sensor on the engine and removed and cleaned the connection to a wire whose insulation virtually grumbled in my hands. (if this old wire grounded against the firewall would it have destroyed the dashboard gauge?) I did my best to wrap the exposed wire in black electrician's tape. What I thought was a gauge that was pinned on the 'H' (Hot) but when I started the car the needle moved from left to right rather quickly all the way to the right side of the gauge side by the 'H'. So the gauge responded with movement but this happened before the engine got barely warm. Would a bad thermostat give this result? Do you suggest, if all fuses and breakers are OK, to remove the sensor out of the engine and inspect and clean? Is there not a history that would indicate a weakness in this issue of the dashboard engine temp gauge malfunctioning? If the gauge is ultimately deemed bad, can you suggest where I could acquire one? I know of Kanters in NJ, but there may be better options. Thank you so very much!
