Good Technical info, thanks. Can you change the shaft or add/weld additional length? I also wanted to know what the manual knob for the overdrive does. is it a way to truly shift into overdrive or is it a different mode?

Steve

Thanks for the encouraging remarks.

You can't beat the look of a bathtub. I was actually looking for a Super. I like the grille and rear treatment, but this one is so well done I fell for it. I think the true wire wheels and great black paint did it for me.

Any issues I should look out for?

Here is another few pics.

Thanks for the info. I have to ask the seller about the conversion. It appears he did part of the restoration and the collector that owned it before him with the big checkbook did some. I'll be sure to find out as much as I can about how the conversion is done so I know how to repair it if needs be.

Is it possible to change the solenoid shaft to a longer one?

What do you think of the value = price?

1950 Deluxe questions
#5
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

Steve's 1st Packard
I posted this in the Modifications forum but thought I'd put it here as well.

I'm in the negotiations stage to buy a 1950 Deluxe. Actually I've already agreed to it. It's a very nice example and great looking paint, body and interior. It seems to have had a significant number of "updates" including a spin on oil filter, wire wheels, and a 12 volt conversion.

2 questions

1 is there a 1.25 inch 12 volt overdrive solenoid? I've seen the ones from 5th ave and vintage garage, and they are the wrong length at 1 inch.

2. With everything I've read about the needless conversion to 12v and how they should be left alone, is this a worthwhile purchase? I'm not looking at a rare or high dollar model and as a driver it's a beauty.

Opine away!

Steve (on his way to to being the man who owns 2.)

Hershey AACA National Meet
#7

Not too shy to talk

Steve's 1st Packard
I was at the Hershey show over the weekend. Lots of great stuff to see and too much to see in a day. I stopped at the Packard Club hospitality tent, and saw many of the packard parts guys. One thing I noticed was the price of the 1929 & 1930 Limos. There were a number of them there for what seemed like a great deal. A 29 645 that seemd to be in mostly orig condition for 39k. A 10yr old restoration (nice!) 740 for just under 50k. More than I have to spend right now, but very tempting. The most impressive car was a 1915 Limo, it's massive.

All in all not too many Packards represented. I guess the Gettysburg meet was too close for everyone to make a second trip to the area.

Here are some pics.

While not as fancy here is another "X" car that I just saw on Ebay.

It reminds me of Ross's creation I saw at the Gettysburg Show. I'll try and upload few pics of that.

Packards1 I'll try and get to the meet in Gettysburg. If I can get the brakes working I might even be able to drive the 55!

Is there any way to decode the VIN to figure the options and color combinations? Otherwise where do I locate the paint and interior colors on the car? Is there a place on the site for the interior color combinations? I've been looking around and haven't fond that yet. Most of the medallions are pretty worn. Are they available for less than an arm and a leg?

What is the thoughts on replacing the seat covers, Headliner and carpet with reproduction material. Does it diminish the car or is a nice new interior a plus?

HH, thanks I did locate the service manual and some other info on the site. I'm amazed at the depth of the material this site has!

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I'll post more pics as I work on cleaning her up.

Jim, You and Randy seem to agee with everyone that Ed is the best for the BTV. Randy congrats to you too. Thanks for the heads up on the shop manual info. Is it all online?

Ross, The interior is Maroon with tan brocade (I think, it's old and could have been white) . There are some tears and rotted spots so I'm planning on getting seat covers, headliner and a carpet set from Kantner unless anyone has a better suggestion.

Thanks for the leveler info, there is a jury rigged bunch of stuff under the dash with an additional single position switch that i don't know what it does. I'm glad to find a way to get her straight until I sort everthing out.

From the few posts I read, you can do some damage if you power it down too far!

Living here, so close to Hershey and Carlisle I had to get something cool. I've had a bunch of Muscle and Sports cars in the past, but this is my first 50s classic. Anyone go the shows here in Central PA?
