Chev drivetrain swap on these cars?

We're finally getting around to our packard... Cylinder compression tests show that cyl 1 has about 90, cyl 6 has about 50, and the other 6 cylinders have 0...

At this point, we don't even know if the auto trans is any good and I'm wondering if swapping out to a fuel injected drive train would be a better option?

Anyone here ever do this?

The starter is engaged in the flywheel and will remain so til the engine starts and kicks the Bendix back. That is your noise. There is nothing in the Ultra that will make a noise like that unless it were thoroughly toasted already.

Mousies can't get into Ultras unless the filler cap was left off as the vent and weep holes are too small even for them.

Hmm... I'm interested in testing this out. I would have though the bendix would work the same as the one I have on our 1927 Model T, Where it is disengaged unless you apply the starter, to which point it throws the gear down the shaft to turn the fly wheel.

From your explanation, it works the exact opposite. I should be able to apply 6 volts to the bendix, and turn the engine again, and not hear the noise. I will try this tonight.

Again, thank you both for the suggestions/insight. I really do appreciate all the help/encouragement.

Thank you for the reply.

I guess I should have gone a bit more into the engine thus far. I know the noise is in the trans, and does sound like it is coming from the bell housing area. The engine was running 4 years ago. Other than checking for a mouse house inside the oil pan, the rest of it checks out. (compresion, valves, oil pres, etc.) The car has been at my cousins house for the past 6 years until we bought it. Mice a scarce around there, the garage is attached to there house, and there cats litter box is in the garage, so if any mice where around, they would have been there for long. I'll drop the inspection plate this evening and have a look at what I an dealing with. I guess I wanted to be sure these Ultramatics came apart the same as a typical auto-trans before I got under and started moving things around.

2392-5 Packard w/288 & Ultramatic

http://rides.webshots.com/video/3086481160051605899BEhwuz

Please listen to this video, what I had dad doing was putting an extended ratchet on the balancer bolt on the front of the engine and rotating the engine by hand. I was under the car, the video shows the bottom of the Ultramatic. I need to know what this noise is. I don't want to fire up this old girl and have it ruin the trans in the process.

Thank you all in advance for the boatload of info that is about to come in. You folks have always been good at providing extremely useful information.

Fred's just upset that I haven't ordered anything yet...

Fred - I did receive a catalog last week. Thank you. I've been pawing over the different braking setups... And I have to figure out what coil/distributor set I have to get the correct replacements and wires very soon... I'll be in touch, no need to threaten timing chain issues...

All are welcome here and are treated equally disrespectfully, as gentlemen we just wait a while.
By the way you're a boob, not a noob. Have a terrible day and may your timing chain jump three notches.

I'll take being called a boob... I've been called much worse.

I've ordered in a specific coating for the manifolds, it seals rough, not smooth like most powder coat. And the finish looks pretty close to cast. One thing is sure, I won't have to do them again... I went ahead and told them the vent shaft should be black... They already have it done.

Well I'm glad I've finally found a forum where questions can be asked and an honest debate be had, without persons calling other persons names or pointing out something obvious that the questionee had asked to make them look foolish. I've built/am building a list of cars, this is the first Forum to honestly be kind and offer great help/advise without being at each others throats or making the topic poster look like a complete noob. (Although with this car I absolutely am.) I've got many vehicles that I've built over the past, and this site is truly the best I've been fortunate enough to come across.

I won't name the other sites I'm a member of, but our other cars include, in order of year.

1927 Model T Ford Tudor (Original Crank Engine)
1946 Chev 1/2 Ton (Rodded)
of course our precious 1949/50 Packard
1970&1/2 Camaro RS/SS
1975 Porsche 914
1981 Camaro (Rodded)
1995 Camaro Z28 (Modified, but original equipment)

1996 Land Rover Discovery (Parents daily Driver - Gotta keep them safe)

2004 Chev Silverado Z71 (My Parts hauler / Daily Driver)

Thanks again for all the help and support you guys bring to this site.

LOL, I wasn't looking to start an argument about anything... I was originally looking for the draft tube color along with the manifold colors...

I posted this topic as I could not find a clear pic of a restored engine bay with a good look at any of them.

Can we all go back to getting along as common Packard owners?

Thank you again for the quick replies, everything is at the shop and should be done early next week.

Things are looking up in getting this old girl fired up...

Thanks guys, I was refering to the vent pipe from the rear inspection plate down to the side of the transmision.

It will be black.

Powder Coat on the exhaust man - I'm assuming you are worries about the choke flap assembly being stuck in one position? We've got work arounds for that... So the intake and exhaust mans should be a cast color? I've got just the thing, will take pics when it's all done and post for you all.

Engine isn't gettin done at this point as I don't have to pull it. (original problem was no pressure in half the cylinders. t'was stuck valves)There's no leaks from it as of right now, so I'm going to leave it at that.

The hope is to have it moving on it's own power so I can move it in and out of the garage as small jobs come in that will be paying cash so I can put the money towards the project.

Thanks again for the quick replies! This site and it's members are amazing!

Manifolds:

I've looked through the pictures, and they look to be either a very bright grey, or a darker white color in the pics that look to have everything restored to factory colors. But all the pics are from the battery side of the engine bay.

I've got the two, manifolds off to a friends shop to be blasted and powder coated. I try to stay as close to factory colors as I can with the powder coat, could anyone please let me know what the colors should be for these items?

Breath Pipe:

It's black and covered in years of crap, it's out getting an acid bath at the local engine rebuilding shop. Is this piece originally black?

Thanks a lot folks.
