The idea behind the 320 sand paper is that the "grit" separates the the paper itself from the wet ink and the grit dose not disturb the print. Plain paper would wick up the ink and would create a light spot on your woodgrain. A more coarse grit like 100 will work O.K. but if it happens to move or slide it is more likely to scuff your parts. A very fine grit will let the paper make contact with the wet ink. 320 just seems to be the best grit for woodgraining. That is what the "old timers" that I learned from used. We have an inexpensive corner tool that helps with very tight corners like 90 degree ones found on many 20's cars. The YS 238K is Going to be fine for your base color. It is nearly identical to LS 120. PPG DX330 PPG NCP271 These are the recommended primer and hardener that we have used with very good results. Dupont ChromaBase Base Coat (This is your YS 238K) Incidentally Dupont ChromaBase is the only base coat we have found that works well with our Woodgraining process. House of Kolor SG-100 (this is different from your YS 238K, it is an intercoat clear and its use is optional) JDee can give more advice on the SG100. Slow reducer (this is the reducer for the YS 238K the Chroma-Base maker) 3 Coats House of Kolor UFC-35 Clear (the urethane) Yes, this is the urethane clear coat that we have used with very good results. Wet sand with 2000 grit Buff to gloss Yes, It sounds like you talked with JDee on the painting. JDee is the one to talk to on this as he is the one that is the most knowledgeable among us of this aspect of the woodgraining process and I am sure he will add his two cents worth. The blending paper is simply 320 wet/dry sand paper. We reuse it for years. Remember to lay it rough side down. Hope this helps, and again the YS 238 will be fine for the base color on the Mottled Aspen Woodgrain. Evan

Joe, This is Evan from Grain-It. I wanted to touch base with you on your 40 Packard Packard Super 8 Convertible Sedan.
First of all I really like your Packard and I can't wait to see the Duchess restored! J.D. has posted some of documentation on the 1940 Packard. The first photo is Packard Factory information from 1940 on woodgrain and Tenite. It shows the Mottled Aspen ( very early Production before Nov. 1939 )This woodgrain uses DuPont Chroma-base LS120 base color, Mottled Aspen woodgraining plate and driftwood ink. The Sepele ( also refered to as Sapel or saple Mahogany ) Was offered in two different tones. The top left is the one that is most common for your 160, it is Sepele With DuPont Chroma-Base YS 227 base color, Sepele woodgraining plate and Carpathian Elm ink. The second tone/color is almost a silver/Grey Sepele with driftwood ink. I have only restored one like this. In the photos that follow we have a dash piece woodgrained by us in the darker Sepele and an original piece showing original Sepele woodgrain that was protected under the chrome. The last photo is an early Mottled Aspen dash with original woodgrain. We prepared a sample (shown in center of photo) before we striped the dash for restoration. We want to help you in your woodgrain restoration to make sure you have all the information you need to accurately restore your Packard. My question is in your photos: dashjpeg and dashpiecejpeg are these photos of the original dash that came out of your car? The reason I ask is that those photos show the darker Sepele woodgrain on them. If this dash is original to your car the Mottled Aspen would not be the corect woodgrain for your Packard. Is the dash out of another 1940 Packard possibly a later model? This would explain the difference in woodgrain. Either way we are happy to assist you however we can.
