Re: WDO-531 carb base gasket question

Thanks, Howard. I have that page but it doesn't show the base gasket. On my intake manifold is the thick heat insulator; I'm calling the base gasket the one that goes between that and the iron carb base, which has the throttle shaft.

Only some of the WDOs use the CarStarter switch, so I think they sent me the wrong base gasket.

hi, JD-
My '47 has WDO-531 with the CarStarter switch. My base gasket looks incorrect: it's covering the vacuum passage leading to the starter switch, and the little steel ball in there. The gasket has to allow vacuum through, obviously- right? Does anyone have a photo of a proper base gasket? Thanks much!

356 starter not disengaging

1947 Packard 356: this 4052 starter cranks the engine fine, but makes a terrible noise when the engine fires, like it's pushing against the flywheel, when the drive should be thrown clear. We took the starter completely apart: everything looks good. Relay points were cleaned and set to .030.

I've played with carb starter switch and set against another good 356. The flywheel teeth look OK. Any ideas?

Thanks, Ross, for the advice. Turns out the idle passage gaskets (between bowl section and lower body) weren't sealing. It idles fine now!

I also wanted to know if the main jets were correct, while it was apart, and they are.

Thanks, Owen. It looks like I can't accurately set the metering rods without the special gauge, or at least the measurement from one.

Carter WDO idles rough

WDO (-531) on my 1947 Packard 356 is dumping fuel from main nozzles at idle. Of course, it's way too rich and won't idle. The main jets are stamped 120 and "1395" or "139S"; how can I tell if these are the correct size for the carb?

I've lowered the metering rods a little, but without the special Carter T109-113 gauge, I can't tell exactly where they should be. Surely someone reproduces these metering rod gauges, right?

1947 Packard 356: I don't have the T109-113 metering rod gauge. Does anybody have one of these? Is there an accurate way to set the metering rods without the Carter gauge? Thanks for any and all help with this!

Thanks very much, Owen! I really appreciate your advice. I'll probably end up replacing most of the guides.

1947 356: What's the minimum valve stem diameter before I have to discard the valve?
