My '56 "400" has a Twin Ultramafic that was refurbished three times and finally made to work..but it is still unreliable enough for me not to drive it far from home. The transmission leaks as usual in my experience.
I originally wanted to convert to the three speed overdrive but was talked out of it to keep the car original... Rare to find a three speed overdrive, lucky are those that have one. In a previous post I said the engine stalled while driving, thinking it was fuel or ignition related, I later smelled the electrical burn..and then the windows became in operable. Next stop is a new wiring harness..as I think the problem was a ground that killed the firing of the engine. The car is as bought except for paint and some interior. The original fabric was saved and only the leather had to be replaced. It has a new padded dash. Engine work was done as needed .. So how does one replace the wiring harness on this really big automobile? Murphy

My 56 "400" has been running well on several short drives until yesterday. At speed the engine seemed to stop running and lost power. The next moment power returned. Stalling happened a few more times but by the time we arrived home the engine ran normally. The engine has been rough starting of late, normally this 352 starts on the first turn.
Would anyone care to comment if this is a lifter problem? Murphy Lake

The manual transmission is a thread that binds....<div>My '56-400 was slated to have Ross install a 3 speed overdrive..He was able to get the original rebuilt Twin-Ultramatic to work properly. Thanks for the response.... This will be a major job as there are so many parts besides the transmission to install.. Do yo think I can find a Hurst shifter for the Packard 400? and then be able to leave the push button column in place. I will check the differential ratio...Is there a matching one available? Do you have the entire set up or must I look for additional parts? I am at flatlander@me.com or phone 262 673 0807 (9a-2p- M-Th) I am also consulting with Stuart Blond at Kanter... Another post says the rear end is a dana90 and can be modified...so I would like to have the overdrive version....if you agree. How much without the steering column...as I want to keep the push button look... . Regards Verne Holoubek
