Is there any way to find out how many 1938 model 1182 Packards were made in Canada?

I tried doing searches on this Website without any luck.

I just wanted to find out how many cars like mine were made.

Thanks,
Jim

Thank you very very much.
That is the 1938 Packard Model 1600 Touring Sedan that I now own. It is nearly completely restored now. I bought this car in 2012.
Now I can have a reproduction Brass plate made that will look just like the original one only better.

Thanks again for your prompt help with this mystery.
Jim

Canadian Vehicle Number Plate

Recently I found a couple of pictures of vehicle number plates of Packards made in Canada on this Website, but now I can't find them again after doing many searches various ways.
I don't recall which Forum it was in.

It turns out that one of the plate pictures has the same vehicle number that my car has (1182558).

I would like to find out who submitted that picture so I can determine if is from my 1938 Packard which was made in Canada. I have lost the vehicle number plate from my car now, I don't recall what it looked like for sure. I think mine was in better condition and it had the patent numbers on it. I recall mine being Brass.

I'm going to have a reproduction vehicle number plate made, so I would like it to be as accurate as possible of the original plate.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Thank you very much for this information that you dug up. This will be very helpful in our search.

I started looking in the '35 - '41 Packard Parts Manual and found quite a few model numbers that had the same Ring & Pinion part number. I'm trying to convert all the different model numbers to model names.

The '38 Six 4.54:1 Ring & Pinion part number is supposed to be 900066. These are the model numbers I found that have the same Ring & Pinion part no.: 115C, 120C, 120CD, 120CA, 138CD, 120B, 120BA, 120, 1600, 1601-1D, 1700, 1701, 1703, 1705, 1801-T1900-1901, 1801-1901, 1803A-1903A, 1805-8-1905-8.

Now, all I have to do is find a NOS set, or a set in very good condition. I'm looking for maybe a 3.54:1 ratio.

We want to change the ring & pinion gears in our '38 Packard Six model 1600 4-Dr. Touring Sedan. The ration is 4.54:1.

We've seen ring & pinion sets and 3rd members listed for car years older & newer than ours.

We would like to find out, if possible, which years & models are interchangeable with ours.

Can anyone tell us where we can find out this information?

Thanks.

Thanks for the info.
We'll try it again with even more force than before.
Maybe a little WD-40 will help.

Remove Horn Button on '38?

I did a search, but couldn't find how to remove the horn button on our '38 Packard Six.

We tried the pushing in and turning counter-clockwise, but that doesn't seem to work.

We don't see any screws underneath the steering wheel that could possibly hold the horn button in. We don't have a horn ring, just the button.

We're hoping that we won't have to remove the steering column to do this. All we need to do is replace the steering wheel.

If anyone knows how to remove the horn button on a '38 Packard Six Model 1600, please let me know. We would certainly appreciate it very much. We don't want to damage anything during the removal.

Thanks.

Thanks for all the info about the overdrive retrofit.
We'll have to think about this a little more before trying to do this job.

I think that we might try the rear end gear ratio change first. That sounds like an easier job that should help lower the engine RPM's at highway speeds.

Flackmaster, how little will you take for the 3.92:1 rear end gears? I assume that it is the complete 3rd member that will fit our '38 Packard 6 1600 model, and that it is in good working condition?

By the way, I think a lot of the Ford Ranger parts (including the transmissions) were made by Mitsubishi or other Japanese companies.

Thanks!

Will your '39 transmission with overdrive bolt up to our 6 cylinder engine without any modifications? Is it a R9 or a R6 that others have referred to? What's the difference between the R6 and R9 overdrives?

I certainly would be interested in buying your '39 overdrive transmission if the price is reasonable. We have a 4.54:1 rear end ration in our '38, so we really need an overdrive.

We are also considering the installation of an older Ford Ranger 4 speed transmission where the 4th gear is overdrive.
We think the front mounting on this transmission will fit on our flywheel/clutch housing without too much modification. Of course, we'd have to use a Ford clutch disc and install the proper size pilot bearing. Has anyone done this kind of modification?

Thanks for all the information.

It looks like this wouldn't be as easy as I was hoping for.

I've found out that there are adapters available to modify some other overdrive unit so that it has a U-Joint on the front. This will require two drive shafts of course. A company in El Cajon, CA does this installation work, but they are very expensive. Has anyone done this modification?

By the way, I did do a search on "transmission" and "overdrive", but I couldn't find any info that applied to my situation.

We are still in the process of restoring our '38 Packard. We just had the engine rebuilt, and now it is in running condition. Most of the body parts are still removed from the body. We still need to do some rust repair and bodywork. Then, we have to get some parts re-chrome plated, get it painted, get it upholstered, etc.

I'll add our car to your registry as soon as I get a chance.
