'28 526 running board trim installation

I just received my fenders, running board and side trim back from body/paint. I have the reproduction aluminum trim from the DelawareCCA. I found some 1/4 inch elevator bolts from the hardware shop and using the grinder, flatened two sides to form a head that would slide into the slot in the outer running board trim as similar square sloped bolts used originally are not to be found.
When I disassembled the old trim, I found some kind of material between the aluminum trim and the runningboard and between the aluminum trim and the fenders and side trim. It appeared to be similar to 15 lb asphault felt used under house roofing shingles but it was very deteriorated. Does anyone know what to use when I reassemble the parts. I know something should be used to prevent dis-similar metal corrosion between the aluminum and steel but could use some help here. I know it is not the beaded trim used between fenders and body since there is no place for a bead to be placed. Any help?

I used a thin rubber strip in that location.
