The transmission on the 740 has three plugs on the side of the case. The handbook only refers to 2 plugs. The lower plug is the drain but I do not know which of the other two is the fill level. I would think it is the lower one as this brings the oil up to around the shaft of the cluster gears.
However it is very difficult to engage any gear from rest when the car is hot so there is some clutch drag that the oil overcomes when cold but not when it is hot so I am wondering if the upper plug is the fill level.
I initially used 90 grade oil but that was way too thin to stop the gears hot or cold now I now have Penrite T250 which allows the gears to be easily engaged cold with virtually no crunching but not after a run of a few miles.
Maybe the upper plug is the hot weather fill level, any thoughts?
