On prewar cars some have found trim and paint codes handwritten on the back of the patent plates where the vehicle number is stamped but otherwise, unless you are lucky enough to find the build slip still in the car there is no other place. On postwars, build slips have been found taped to the top of the glove boxes or sometimes folded into a small rectangle and tucked between the fuel filler pipe and vent tube under the fender. Not sure if they did the same with prewars. The build slip is a narrow 3-4" wide strip of teletype paper with a line of printing and maybe a few handwritten numbers. If found it will be very brittle.
