They began to appear as the supply of original Purolator units dried up with no alternatives, in the late 1950s more or less. Then in the 1960s Bob Turnquist offered true repro (disposable sealed canister as the originals) units of the L-6 and L-8 but they were very expensive; then folks like Burr Ripley and R&A saw the market opportunity to offer their conversion products with a replaceable element, I've been running a Ripley L-6 unit for several decades now.
