If stock, your pump inlet will be on the rear side for your model engine but there is nothing preventing the bottom part of pump casting from being mounted 180 out if someone decided to do so. That would change the locations. Here is the factory photo of the proper arrangement of lines. The proven method of determining would be to have someone crank the engine while you put your finger on the ports. The one with suction would be the inlet.

The illustration from the factory SM is of a 288/327 fuel pump AC# 508 with the outlet facing forward. The outlet has the long sprue and most have the pressure dome. The inlet hose fitting goes directly into the side of the body.
The 356 pump is AC #9116 and uses the identical parts but the bottom casting is rotated 180 degrees with the outlet pointed towards the back Thank James

Interesting.
I'm going to need to know the line routing for my 356 as the fuel lines between the carb and pump are not present. So if the 356 bottom casting is rotated 180? anyone have a picture of that routing?

This is 21st series. Believe the 22-23 356 fuel line route is the same. It has a gentle bend at the pump to go out and then up past the heat shield. Believe the vacuum portion for the 22-23 dual action pump is the same as the above smaller engine.
I don't see any complete photos of the line with the filter added but those partials in the archive seem to show the regular tube just moved out so the filter will fit in next to carb and then line rebent and angled back slightly to complete the route to the pump.

Here's a bit of info (that I believe to be accurate) -
If you're replacing the fuel lines, The radius of a beer keg is close and easy to get a good clean bend between the carb and the fuel pump. At least it looked correct on my '50 Eight Deluxe when I replaced it last year.
