If you're talking about the Water Distribution Tube, I believe it is brass and without it your cooling won't be working correctly. Also check to see if the flap in the exhaust manifold is free, if it is stuck closed it will hold the heat in also.
Found a photo of the brass tube installed and I'm also post the link where I found it. packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb ... um=1&post_id=216418#forumpost216418 Wes

Push the tube in as far as it goes--the little tabs of brass on the side keep it from going in too far. It can not stick out into water pump.
Perhaps you are thinking of the gap between the rotor in the pump and pump housing. That must be small, perhaps 0,8mm so that the pump is efficient.

Also, you should have better luck with the thermostat installed.

thank you for all your thoughts and helpful links. i have disassemble the waterpump and found maybe the reason. with the last assembling of the pump i have used maybe to much sealing silicon. you can see i have closed one hole in the watercircuit between pump and engine. i will take care with the new pump and use less silicon on the seal. in any case if this hole free, i will have more circulation. thank you, best regards Josef
