The same basic pump fits most pre 51 models made over several years with the placement and size of the fan hub on the pump shaft being the major difference between engines or years. After 51 the engines need a different pump because of the lower radiator and fan placement.
A few years ago Kanter Auto had a reproduction pump made for the earlier pumps and may still have some. You might check with them to see if his repro fits your engine. I bought one for my 47 Custom with the 356 engine and it was quality and a perfect bolt on fit. As far as buying a NOS pump, that or a rebuild may be an only option on some engines. There should not be too much issue with a NOS as long as storage has been reasonably decent and rust on machined surfaces has not been an issue to damage anything.

Just go to that link and type in "water pump". It has options for 356's and 288's.
Also Kanter lists water pumps as well: Kanter Auto Parts, Packard Parts 1940-1950 As always, best probably to give either one of those vendors a call.
