1953 Ultramatic Transmission Oil Cooler - Is the rubber part supposed to be there?

Hi Folks,

In pulling the water pump off of my 1953 327, I also took off the transmission cooler. Pictures attached here and in follow up comments.

It looks pretty good, but there is this weird piece of rubber at the inlet side. Is that supposed to be there?

There were no noted problems with the cooling system or transmission, this is related to the "In-Car Rebuild" post I posted a bit before, I'm trying to get a look at all the components I can easily check out, and I definitely need to replace the timing cover gasket.

Any other comments or suggestions? What should I look for here, how should I test? It really doesn't look too bad, from what I can tell. How should I recondition?

Thanks and Sincerely,

Jerome Solberg

I was thinking about electrolysis, since I've been successful with that on my exhaust manifold, but I don't really know if there's anything inside it it could hurt.

No the rubber is not supposed to be there. Just wire wheel the outside, rinse out the inside under the tap, and then blow some air through the oil passages and reinstall. Yours looks pretty good, usually the hose connections are far more corroded.
