Inside rear view mirror

The 'day/night' lever on my inside rear view mirror only stays in one position. That is when you select 'night', it instantly snaps back to it's previous 'day' position. Is that a repairable item and if so, can anyone tell me how to fix this? I would attempt it now, but I don't want to break it beyond repair. Thanks in advance for any information about this.

I think it is the original mirror, at least it looks that way. Sounds easy enuf, just don't want seven years bad luck, especially with the cost of replacement parts

Yours might be original, but that mirror was in repro for many years (might still be) and buying a new one was far cheaper than taking an old one apart for rechroming if the plating had begun to fail. It's the repro one that I had the same problem with that you mentioned.

Thanks Owen, I'll look at it this evening. The chrome is in good shape so I'd like to fix this one if possible. Are there any exploded images of these mirrors?

Are there any exploded images of these mirrors?
Not that I'm aware of, but it's a simple spring-driven "over center" design. As I recall it's a General Motors Guide-Division product so if you can find a website on those products, you might find something.

It was a patented device. If you can find any patent numbers on yours, then a search of the Patent Office might be interesting as such patents usually had diagrams to explain the novelty, though patent holders rarely gave their "best" iteration of the invention.
If you do that, let us know how you make out.
