About the black stripes on the tinfoil on the sides of a senior car....

The black paint on mine is falling off in bits.

Has anyone ever fixed this using striping tape?

Seems like a monster job, but possibly doable. Opinions?

I did my 400 with tape. I clearcoated it afterward. That was in '92. Still looks reasonably good. I would do two or three rows on a piece and go upstairs and drink.

After a thorough cleaning and then a solvent wash with acetone, I did mine with black enamel and a striping brush. Though very pleased with the result, it was tedious and if I had it do do again, I'd go with tape.

I did 41 catwalk grilles with tape (even found a good color match) - much neater job than by hand

With all due respect, the Caribbean only has the stainless ribs surrounding the parking lights. The 56 400 has the stainless surrounding the car. I thought about buying a good striping tool, but what would I use it for after I was done striping the car?

Randy, I beg to differ regarding the Caribbeans and just the parking lights having the black between the ribs. How about the rear tail lights, and the stainless ribbed trim below the trunk lid? Are you saying they aren't supposed to painted similarly? Mine still had traces of black paint on them.

What I did on my Caribbean was use masking tape on the area not to be painted and then spray painted. Has held up ten years so far.

Sorry Dave - you are correct, but that little bit of trim pales when you consider the side trim on the 400 has 24 valleys that all need to be painted or taped.

Here is a couple of pictures related to my experience with stripping my Reynolds wrap. I first attempted to do it myself, found it extremely tedious and in the end didn't like the result. I was lucky enough to find a fellow that eventually pin stripped all my pieces instead. Close to 4 years later, it still looks pretty good.
