I've not read that section of the shop manual, but that statement is a bit confusing to me. Normally if the seal is beginning to leak, coolant will start coming out of the weep hole. I wonder if perhaps it refers to the clearance between the impellor and the backing plate? If excessive that will allow coolant to "short circuit" within the pump body and hence give lessened flow thru the system.

You got it exactly. I'm still having moderate overheating issues, even with the new large radiator. The waterpump is the only thing I didn't rebuild or replace during the engine overhaul last year. thanks
