Brake drum removal - 1954 Packard Clipper

The front drum brake on my Packard are stuck but before I use the brake drum puller on it I wanted to know if the peg that is used to hang the rim on in order to line up the tire comes off or not. Mine turns but it doesn't seem to unscrew but I didn't want to risk breaking it if it is supposed to come off before I pull the drum.

No, the peg is not supposed to be removed. If the front drums are stuck, it may be because the brake shoes are expanded so much they are catching on the drum, contract them using the star adjuster. No puller should be needed, but if you need a little extra leverage you can put the wheel back on use it to get a better grip on the drum. Just catch the bearings so they dont fall on the floor. Everything is covered in the shop manual.

Generally once the cotter pin the axle nut is removed, then the drum should just pull off by hand.
