After 1900 I think it would be the adaptation of the moving assembly line to the production of the automobile, mostly as practiced by Henry Ford at his Highland Park plant for the Model T. Walter P. Chrysler laid a lot of the groundwork for the moving assembly line at Buick.
This took the car from being a rich man's toy to being something most people could afford.

I don't think there's a single advance. When you look from 1900-1942 every year they came with major improvements. Just look at Packard from 1925-1940 they improved with leaps and bounds!
But come to think of it; probably the invention of the combustion engine cause after 120 years the basics of that is still the same

Electric starting and lighting as introduced with the 1912 Cadillacs. These two greatly expanded the use of motor vehicles.

As mrPB indicates above i would have to agree withthe moving line. Toss up maybe between the.moving line and advancements of the war years 1942 thru 45. However i mite exclude any possibility of claiming advances since the HP revolution of 1955. Only possible ezception mite be CAM.
Might add the interstate hiway system ca. 1960.
