Brake drum spring

Was looking at brakes on front of Randy's Caribbean saw grove relief machined in outside of drum and reminded me that a lot of GM cars back in day had a coil spring installed (spring looked like the type which were used to close screen doors) on out side of drum was told it was to aid in cooling and stop noise. Just a general question curiosity from my old memory of cars.

That circumferential spring on the drum was used on the Packard-Bendix mechanical brake system beginning in 1933 and thru 1936 on the senior cars. The purpose was to reduce squeal (drum chatter) or resonance. The article below from the 1933/1934 Service Letters.

Note the dust shield which encloses the gap between the backing plate and the drum, another feature of this superior brake system. Similar to fuel pump heat shields, these often got discarded back in the day by mechanics saying that they weren't needed, making them no so easy to find today.
